GameStop Sucking

edited 2011-07-28 17:24:24 in General
And by that I mean I don't get why people hate on it so much. I've been to one GameStop that was pretty bad, but for the majority they've given me excellent service. Am I just lucky? Why do so many people seem to hate GameStop in general?

Their business model of cutting out the developer by acting like a pawn shop is pretty much my big reason.
  • People hate gamestop?

Also general price gouging and substandard wares.

They seem fine, in my experience.

Not to mention having to pre-order everything if you want to get it new.
  • Cakman works at Gamestop. He loves it there.

Considering how much venom people on the internet have for the developers themselves, you'd think the pawn shop aspect would be seen as a good thing.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Yeah, it's almost like there are numerous people on the internet with differing opinions or something.
  • Someone link that Zero Punctuation knockoff video.

You know what I mean Malk, and it's often the same people bitching about game companies and used game sellers for the above reasons.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Well, GameStop holds a near-monopoly on the game retail business. That's no good.

^^^Yes, well people are illogical. I for one, don't really have a hatecock for a lot of developers.

^^This is very true. It's also why they can get away with their pawn shop business practice.

    Also, faggy anime games.

    I think Gamestop is okay.

    ^^^ Oh.  Hmm.

Then someone really should try to trade-in that witch-detecting game.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I don't care about its service, but given that I could order almost any game ever released from Amazon, pay around $10 less than I would pay Gamestop (if they even have the game; I've been buying a lot of older games of late) and have it in under 48 hours, I've never understood how they have a monopoly.

Why has pawning video games become so profitable, anyway? Especially newer games.

It's technically not a monopoly, but physical stores control significantly more of the market than online stores do. There was a conversation about gamestop where a guy refused to buy online because he'd have to wait. Srsly.

^Buy a used game. Sell it for three dollars less. No profits go to the developer. Pretty simple

Because they're the only specialized brick-and-mortar store left, that's why they have a monopoly.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
It kinda bothers me that non-food brick-and-mortar stores are still a thing, really. I mean, if I can obtain the thing I want without getting out of bed, why wouldn't I?

^^^ I figured how the economics work for the seller, but this sort of large-scale pawning wouldn't be possible if people weren't so willing to do away with brand new games, too.

Well, the collapse of the economy from all of the suddenly unemployed wouldn't be good. Also, impulse buying and stuff like that.

^Recycling, and there will always be people who want to buy the new games on opening day.

@INUH: One the aforementioned wait, two you can pay with cash. Those combined make it much easier to hide game purchases from your parents. >_>

Also, in this day and age people are still ignorant of online shopping. It's why FYE can sell Buffy seasons for $60 apiece while they're $20 on Amazon.

^That has more to do with people mistrusting random online sellers. That's why I don't but used stuff online, and stay away from ebay.

    V That too.
  • Thane of rum-guzzling and necromancy
Then again, there is something satisfying about going into town to buy something and bring it back physically.

^^Amazon's used dealers are almost all pretty trustworthy. If they aren't, Amazon will give you a refund and deal with them.

^Not for me. I really can't stand driving places.

    ^^^Amazon's pretty trustworthy, though.

All this talk of amazon reminded me to buy FFVIII and a memory card.

  • Don't bother. FFVIII sucks. :D

More on topic, I'm too impatient to wait for the mail, which is why I go to GameStop. And I've gotten pretty much every old game I want at this point anyways, so that doesn't affect me much.
  • I don't dislike GameStop, but I've generally found I can get better prices and better service at the nearby independent game store.

They have a much better selection of games for older consoles, too.
