"Ocarina of Time is THE BEST GAME EVAR"

I have no clue why this meme is virtually omnipresent in gaming culture today.

I can name many games I had far, far more fun playing than Ocarina of Time. Or any Zelda game.

Because lots of people love Ocarina of Time, duh. The fact that one gamer dislikes it doesn't diminish its impact and influence.
  • You can change. You can.
Because that game is the reason gaming is what it is today.

AND YOU'LL HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT, DAMN IT
  • But if 99% of the gaming community likes it, and I don't, then what the hell?

It makes me feel as if though I'm missing something.

  • Majora's Mask is better

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    I preferred MM, myself.

Chagen, here's something you have to consider. When it came out, 3D games were still a new thing.
  • I thought it was Super Mario 64 that truly launched the 3D game genre?

Yeah, but it wasn't much later that OOT came out.

As of when it came out, I'd say OOT definitely was the best game yet released.

    Different tastes?

^I dunno. a Link To The Past was kinda better for me. But I know it's just an opinion.

Yeah, I included the "I'd say" in there for a reason :P
  • Never played Zelda games.

As a result, whenever I read these discussions, I feel like I'm in an alternate world.

    It's funny.
  • ^Same here (kinda).

...The first one was fun. >_>

    Loser
    Chagen,
I have no clue why this meme is virtually omnipresent in gaming culture today.

Is that meme virtually omnipresent? While I think it is true that Ocarina of Time has received perfect 10s on sites like IGN and is often mentioned as a good game, I feel like it is mainly just people who prefer Nintendo games who mention it as being the best game ever. Even then, I think of those people, the Zelda fans are the only ones who tend to talk about it like it is the greatest ever and from what I can tell, even they are divided as to whether it is the best N64 Zelda game, let alone the best game of all time. However, it might be true that I have not encountered a representative sample of Zelda fans.

Basically, while I think that lot of people like Ocarina of Time, I do not believe that the idea that it is the greatest game of all time is as widespread as you seem to describe it as being. Plus, people have different tastes which I believe is part of this. I think that if you do not happen to like the Zelda action/adventure genre then you are less likely to like a game like Ocarina of Time, similarly to how someone who really dislikes shooters probably is not going to like GoldenEye or Counter-Strike.

I believe there are also preferences to consider and sometimes there are things you dislike or like in a game that are different to describe.
  • Kichigai birthday!!
    >NES Zelda Games
    >Fun

    dohohohoho

Shut up, nick, it fucking was. You're just jelly because you never got to have fun in your life and were too busy watching Chargeman Ken.
  • Kichigai birthday!!
I just think they haven't aged that well, unlike the Mario games
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
...my favorite Zelda game was Wind Waker...

I know, I know. Although it may be because I'm used to their mechanics so the clunkiness doesn't hit me hard.

...my favorite Zelda game was Wind Waker...

Dude, are you a girl? /Troll
  • Mine is link's awakening, partially because of nostalgia
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I thought the art style was the best, and the dungeons are really creative. The storytelling is also the best in the series.

It is too short and too easy, but the latter applies to all Zelda games methinks.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    +1 Majora's Mask

It was like the third or fourth Zelda game I played, but it was the first one I enjoyed enough to actually 100%.

Also probably the only game I've ever 100%ed.
  • I dislike Ocarina of Time, I sort-of like Majora's Mask, I like the 2D Zelda games (that I've played, anyway).
  • You can change. You can.
    I dislike Ocarina of Time

    why
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Ocarina of Time is my third favorite Zelda game. Still one of my favorite games, though.

Of the ones I've played (and can remember off the top of my head) the order would probably be
    Majora's Mask > Wind Waker > Ocarina > Twilight Princess > Phantom Hourglass Minish Cap > Link's Awakening > Original Zelda > Zelda 2
  • My personal favorite was MM, but I do understand the OoT love. Also OoT got me through some tough times man.

    also everything >>>>>>>>> Zelda 2
  • why

    To be honest, I forgot.

Though I do remember thinking the enemies were easy to the point they were... just there, not adding anything to the environment and certainly not making me feel I'm on an adventure and not a puzzle game (if in dungeons) or running errands (if elsewhere).
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
^^Yeah, same here. I played lots of OoT during a tough break-up., not to mention the hell that is middle and high school.
  • I personally liked Majora's Mask better, but Ocarina of Time was one of the first (good) executions of a lot of gameplay building blocks that we tend to take for granted in games today.  It's aged remarkably well, too -- even 12 years after the fact, stepping out into Hyrule Field for the first time still feels epic in a very simple and honest way.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
OoT is by all accounts a fantastic game under its own merits, but it was also the right game at the right time. I can't begin to explain how influential that game has been, given that it set the standard for 3D action-adventure. Most modern games still don't match it in terms of game design and storytelling. Not that it's a complex story; it's just a simple legend well told.
