The Nintendo DS

edited 2011-07-17 10:40:45 in Media

Is it wrong that I think that it's the best system yet? Even better than the SNES? (though that's partially since I didn't have a particular attachment to it specifically)

The DS got off to a slow start with the touch screen being used well only for a few games, but after it got its act together, I cannot imagine any current console that has a more versatile library of games, or maybe even in the future. From classic and classic-style experiences with familiar series to ambitious new experiments and less prominent developers, the DS is so wholly satisfying. The aforementioned touch screen has become the ultimate realization of simple, effective control Nintendo aimed for (the Wii tried to reach the same levels, but the game library leaves something to be desired in comparison). Sure, there's a bunch of crap inevitable for such a popular system, and not all experiments work out as the developers planned, but there's still so much I'd like to try on the DS even considering that. That's something I can't say for even the SNES.

Old news. The 3DS is where it's at.
  • And yet the original model is outselling the 3DS.

So far. But like you said the DS had a slow start too. Once more of the promised killer apps start rolling in (the MGS3 remake, Layton Vs Ace Attorney, that new Mario game, the inevitable Pokemon game), history may yet repeat itself.

DS is definitely my favorite system. It helps that it gets like 90% of the non-PC Visual Novels that reach the US.

@DYRE: Wait, it has visual novels?
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I'm INUH. And yeah, a lot. Most of them have more gamish parts than the average VN, but they're still more VN than game.

Besides Ace Attorney and Hotel Dusk, what visual novels actually came over to the U.S.?

There's also Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. And Hotel Dusk's sequel, Last Window, got an English release in Europe and can be imported since the DS is region-free. There are apparently some others too, but those are the really good ones.
  • DS is still not as good as the PS2.

    Yup.

    How so?

Much more quality games. I may be biased, though as I dislike portables.

Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I may be  biased, since I don't have much taste for gritty-looking "more mature" games, which is part of what the PS1 and PS2 were known for (in comparison to Nintendo) and handhelds are much easier to emulate.

That said, care to name examples or explain your point?

    You can change. You can.
I was thinking mostly JRPGs such as KH (I didn't like the DS one as I've felt the gameplay tried too hard to harken back to CoM's and mix it up with KH and left a bit of a mess as well as a really bad start, in my opinion.) and FFXII (The only FF I did enjoy).

And it has better Survival Horrors, which is my favorite genre almost by default, so there's that against me buying a DS. Also, Rockstar better games are on the Ps2 (With the exception of Red Dead Redemption, of course)

And it has MGS 3, which is still, to me, the best game I've ever played.

Ahh, Rockstar.  I have a copy of GTA Vice City that a friend gifted to me when I moved away from Florida years ago.  I still haven't played it.
  • You can change. You can.
I felt Vice City was incredibly silly. It's not a good game, nor a particularly bad game, but it's incredibly silly, which is why I particulalrly like it.

    Then again, I'm a DePalma fan...>_>

Which is getting an updated 3DS release.
  • I want your hard, feathery cock, Bird Boy.
It's gonna have Yoshi's instead of those little frogs.
  • You can change. You can.
But is that a DS, huh? It has a 3! Therefore, different. :D

Jokes aside, yeah, I'm aware, not sure if I'm really interested on it. Depends on what they do with the mechanics, but if the game ends up being the same but with grass images on my face, welp...count me out.
  • I want your hard, feathery cock, Bird Boy.
I know it's gonna use the gyroscopic features for some things, and it'll also have a VERY cool feature where you can take a picture of any pattern, and make that your camouflage.
  • You can change. You can.
    Not sure if I like...>_>

But maybe I'm just being a bit too conservative here. After all, the original's camo system did suck. What with all the menues and pausing the game constantly.
  • I want your hard, feathery cock, Bird Boy.
Well, it does have two screens to work with. You know how the DS is always about menu preservation, especially with their remakes.
  • You can change. You can.
Makes sense, and it seems like they're going for an octocamo-like camufalge system on this one. Thing is, I think it'd be going too far on my already weak suspension of disbelief.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
The 3DS really is the perfect system for aiming a gun with the gyro and all.

Though it kinda bugs me that it's not quite 1-1 motion. Your character moves more than you do, at least in OOT3D.

It is different though.  It's like saying the PS3 is the same as the PS2.
  • I want your hard, feathery cock, Bird Boy.
A good analogy is saying it's like going from the GBA to the DS.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Yeah, it is a different system. But it's worth mentioning in this discussion.
