Were we directed from Washington when to sow, and when to reap, we should soon want bread.

I'm having difficulty understanding what Thomas Jefferson is saying the metaphore is lost on me just the wording seems off. Can anyone help m eout here?

    I think he's saying that the government can't possibly know what its people need better than them, so it shouldn't define every possible action that they take, and it shouldn't be too strict, lest it constrict. In short, it sounds like a quote you would very much agree with.
