"Gradius" is pronounced "Gra-DE-us"

I feel dumb for pronouncing it wrong all this time (for those wondering how I can be sure, that's how its pronounced in the intro to Gradius Gaiden) On the bright side, it's yet another thing I can hold over Yu-Gi-Oh's head.

Wait...  how else would you pronounce it? (assuming I'm reading your pronunciation right)

Also what does this have to do with Yu-Gi-Oh!?
  • As opposed to "GRAH-dee-us"?
  • Actually, now that I think of it, I actually usually pronounce it like "radius" except with a G.  Though I guess the first part should really be more like "grah" than "gray", huh?
  • They're somethin' else.
wait, so is it Greydeeus or grahdeeus?

The latter, according to the Japanese pronunciation. (it's guradiusu, as opposed to gureediusu or something)

Before seeing the intro I always pronounced it "GRAD-ius" (Grad as in Grad Student)

For those wondering, it sounds like the in-game narrator pronounces it "Grah"

There were Yu-Gi-Oh cards based on Gradius. In the anime Duke Devlin had them in his deck.

Not only did he pronounce "Gradius" wrong (to be fair, at the time Gradius Gaiden wasn't out yet) but the cards made it look like Gradius was the ship you pilot, when Gradius is actually the planet you're defending (the ship is called the Vic Viper).

Konami made Gradius, and Konami is in charge of the distribution and creation of Yugioh cards. There we go.

And to be fair, they probably misidentified the Vic Viper on purpose so people would get the reference.

I'm willing to bet the Japanese Duke Devlin pronounced "Gradius" right, though.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
    As opposed to "GRAH-dee-us"?

That's how I always pronounced it (and frankly, I still do, no matter what's correct). It's actually like the German "Radius" only with G.

(for those wondering how I can be sure, that's how its pronounced in the intro to Gradius Gaiden)

The male and female voices pronounce it differently.
  • Gradius itself is a mispronunciation.  It was originally supposed to be «Gladius», as in the Latin word for a sword.

Yet they invented a cool new name in the process.

I say GRAY dee uhs, though.

    Greh Die Us.
  • I say GRAY dee uhs, though.

As do I.  It's still wrong though.

Okay, I just found the version with the female narrator.

    She says "GRAY-dius."

So eh, this thread has just been rendered pointless.
  • The katakana spelling is グラディウス (gradiusu).  So, presumably it's intended to be pronounced like "grah-dee-us" or else they would have spelled it like グレーディウス (gureediusu) or グレイディウス (gureidiusu).
  • Especially since "Gladius" is pronounced "Glah-dee-us".

    "Glah-dee-us"--> "Grah-dee-us"

    Well... yeah. >.>

I blame samurai.  Them being cool is what made me become a weeaboo back when I was in elementary school.  Also Japanese video game developers making more games that I liked than non-Japanese developers.
  • You can change. You can.
    So...Seven Samurais, Y/N?
  • Haven't seen it.

It's one of the best movies of all time. If you can find Criterion Collection's three-disc edition, grab it.

Look for Yojimbo while you're at it. And the uncut, subtitled version of Gojira (aka Godzilla: King of the Monsters).
