    The obvious solution is to give Gyarados a water/dragon evolution, in which it reclaims its dragon status and is angrier than ever. :D

    ...Of course, it's also Asian mythology, so I wouldn't be surprised (I can't find too much information on the legend in English, and my Japanese leaves a lot to desire for, so I'm at a dead end gathering more information on things such as how the dragon raged)

    EDIT 2: ^^^ Would make more sense to have it go Magikarp - Water/Dragon - Gyarados, since Gyarados is the serpent after it lost its dragon status

    Actually, what would make the most sense is to put a water/dragon evolution between the two, since Magikarp represents the karp, not the dragon. But that would be too screwy.

    And the joke was that a Pokemon with a base stat total of 540 would be getting an evolution with better types on top of better stats.

    Gyarados has 2 things keeping it in check: A 4x Electric weakness and Stealth Rock. A Water/Dragon Gyarados would nave neither of those. He'd break the game.

    Come to think of it, he'd be absolutely useless in the metagame. Too powerful for anything but Uber, and the only thing he has on Palkia is a slightly larger Attack and Intimidate.

    A Water//Dragon Gyarados would be... different. It loses it's gigantic weakness to Elec but it gains a weakness to Dragon, and a weakness to Dragon is something that Gyarados absolutely does NOT want.

    There is one, ONE, pokemon only with which the use of Hyper Beam is a legitimately good idea.

    That pokemon is Porygon-Z

    Porygon-Z if trained right will generally be faster than most Close Combat users allowing you to usually get off at least one attack. 

    Often that's all you need with Porygon-Z. Or, you know, just Sash it.
