This is probably Japan's mindset about the whole thing:

I can identify (and even read) a little Japanese as long it's low on kanji, so I kinda just assumed it had kanji up the wazoo because that's how functional Japanese script is.

Except for certain cases like ancient Japanese or addresses, normally you'd find at least a few hiragana on a full sentence like that.

Madoka is not depressing, on account of it being so completely detached from reality that it is nearly impossible to relate to it. It could be sad I guess if you really really empathized with Homura or something, but hardly depressing.

I'd say that it really depends on the person.

That, and something being unrealistic does not stop it from being depressing, after all, all stories still contain a human element, due to the person writing them being, you know, human.

Madoka is very well grounded in existing literature (thanks, Malk). The middle four episodes are even a traditional heroic tragedy. That the show becomes Doctor Who shortly after is immaterial.
