It's interesting that one can think of that as how each ideological extreme sees itself vs. how it sees the other extremes.
Seems this is one of those "Europe ignores Americans because they ruin everything" things.
But then again, it seems a noticeable segment of Europe still feels this way about blackface.
It's for the obvious reason: the implication of gang rape. It's not even really "used ironically" with respect to this meaning in any meaningful interpretation -- the entire point of the meme is that the entity in the center is soon going to get fucked, metaphorically or otherwise, by the entities on the sides, and the power imbalance is part-and-parcel of that meaning.
It'd be less distasteful if the situation depicted were different, such as if it were a character in Smash on the verge of getting pwned by being ganged up on by their opponents, but the intended implication here is inextricably routed through the theme of sexuality.
(On top of this, there is an implication of racism in the original image, though this implication is typically lost in the edits, so it's less relevant.)
Are you sure it's not just an adult film thing? Like, I'm pretty sure that's where the whole trend emerged. At most, I thought it was mildly distasteful rather than any sort of depiction of sexual assault.
But like, as I found out recently, we all see things very differently, and in the end some ways
are more right than othersare right and others are wrong. Like, just now, I kind of felt physically sick when you brought that up, and this:Certainly turns what was a just another weird thing from adult film into like, sexual assault, and so I do think the images that I've seen in this thread aren't a problem, but the attitude surrounding this meme certainly reminded me that this is the internet, where nothing is ever that willfully ignorant.
This might sound severely naive, but I wouldn't think this sort of thing would be big in adult film because either the acting is subpar or it's actually good acting and you become concerned about the participants safety.
I don't think I want any further elaboration on this because I've avoided learning anything about straight adult film for this long and I'd like to keep it that way. Just accept my naivete, please.
I will admit though that the weirder iterations of the meme, particularly the ones that stray from this apparent implication, have the potential to be more entertaining.
