@ glenn: I don't know if it's a take on some particular existing still life or generically any of them, but the "modern items" are a newspaper in Polish, a bottle of industrial alcohol, and a loaf of bread (allegedly used by drinkers of industrial alcohol to filter out the poison). So, the joke relies on juxtaposition of high culture, in the form of the painting bringing to mind all those Rembrandts and Veermeers, with low culture of contemporary bums.
