Don't try to sugar coat the truth.

Example:

At school when I was five we had a class talk on how owning up to making a mistake was the best course of action.
Later that day I left out a paper towel by accident/forgetfulness, when asked who left the 'mess' I took the earlier lesson to heart, I had to tidy up all the paper towels.
If I'd have lied/stayed quiet the outcome would have been better.
