I mistake bringing up the obvious for a conversation starter

Like "Writing an essay, are you?" or "New music?" or "Is that a new haircut?". (I haven't actually said any of these, it's just for example).

Tell me: do I suck at starting conversations, or do people just not want to talk to me?
