This news report about our state's biggest (and I think only) geek convention aired earlier today: http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/on-air/as-seen-on/Countdown_to_Connecticon_2011_Hartford-125214514.html

----

First, the guy talking about his headcrab.

...look, I can understand your enthusiasm, but you could really cut down on it.

Please don't act like most of us know what it is.  Most of us don't.  Hell, I'm a Steam gamer and even I don't know where it's from.  I could come up with the name "headcrab" only from being exposed to internet pop culture and memes, but I couldnt' tell you it's an HL2 thing.  (That said, I haven't played Half-Life.)  Most people don't even know what Half-Life 2 is, or that it's a videogame.

And your overflowing enthusiasm really does not help.  It sounds like you're drunk on the fandom.  Really.  For those of us who don't know what HL2 is, your telling us that it's "like one of the most iconic games, of all time" just ends up making us feel like idiots.

And "nom on you"?  Thank goodness I know what "nom" means, but again, most people don't.  And I'm not sure if it's just that the reporter cropped your interview, but if not, at least you could have spent a moment to tell us that Gordon Freeman is a crowbar-wielding scientist and warrior and Half-Life 2 is a sci-fi videogame.

And I'm happy for you, and I'd let you off at this point, but you tripped the Kanye West meme.

----

As for someone who actually did better in front of the camera, the France person is a good example.  After being presented as "France", she (that's a she, right?) says "Every country is personified, and then they reenact world history."  That's something that all of us can understand.

And Pinkie Pie Guy is also a better example, though not as good as France girl.

----

And the reporter could use a little lesson in geeky fandom terminologies, for that matter.  "Zombies, and others, are all waiting for this: everything animé, from comics to movies and a giant live gaming expo."

Um, sir, "animé" refers to Japanese animated productions.  Not to comics--not even to Japanese comics, and you were showing us Spider-Man and X-Men comics anyway.  And yes, I know for a fact that ConnectiCon is a multi-fandom/multi-genre/multi-medium convention, not just an animé convention.

Also, fail for not knowing the meaning of "anthropomorphic".

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I wanted to go to Connecticon with one of my friends, but I'm out of state all three days. :<
