    I think that Norris is arguing that some want to go against the spirit of the founder's beliefs about religion and government, rather than outright stating that NBC omitting certain words from the pledge is directly related to stuff the founders were doing. At least, that is what I gathered from the article.

    In 1823, near the end of his life, Jefferson similarly wrote: "On every question of construction (of the Constitution), let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed."

    As to whether the article itself is flawed in other ways, your mileage may vary on that, especially on what he says about the wording of the Bill of Rights not being ambiguous.

    Sorry, but I am afraid that I do not quite understand how that quote from 1984 illustrates your point about conservatives. Would you mind explaining it a bit more?
