"You can't complain about free entertainment"

The last line of defense for hacks everywhere. Where "don't like, don't read" and "let's see you do better" fail, this is where they turn.

I like UrinatingTree's take on the subject:

http://deadhorseinterchange.com/main/stuff/S170610.php

Basically, he says that even though you're not paying money for it, you're still spending your valuable time watching it, so even if it doesn't cost money, you're still making some sort of investment. Put simply, they call it "spending time" for a reason.

And the worst part? TV Tropes itself seems to support it:

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
The trope page seems to be for examples where it's pointed out in-universe. If it isn't, it should be.

But yeah, if I watch a two-hour movie, I expect it to be worth spending two hours.

    Pony Sleuth
    Sounds reasonable.

Might I add that people don't think of time as a resource as often as they should.
  • Used all the time by shitty webcomic artists who refuse to improve.
  • No rainbow star
Issue here that I see is on Cracked

They complain about x author or x comic each and every time

You'd think that, by a certain point, they would stop looking at it. The you can't complain excuse certainly applies when the idiot keeps coming back
  • I think it's different for critics...

^^ I know a lot of these kinds of arguments are applied only when the complainer in question is a pissant, but is that really worth shutting down all the non-pissant complaints that just happen to fall under the same criteria too? It's like innocent casualties or something.
  • No rainbow star
^ If you keep complaining by going, "Nope, still sucks" or "Huh. Thought you would have improved by now", then you deserve to be mocked
  • While I agree that this mentality of not complaining about free entertainment is stupid, I also agree that if you continue being pissed / bored by something, you're going to look like an idiot with too much free time and nothing better to do than complain about random shit.
