    What the hell is "alternative" rock, anyway?

    What is it the alternative to? Whenever someone says they're into alt. rock, I am confused. It mostly seems to denote some kind of semi-punk social group more than anything in the music itself.

    It's the "alternative" to metal and new wave and dance music and other things that were popular in the 80s.  Though, the name doesn't make as much sense now as it did then.

    When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    It's one of the more "encompassing" musical genres.

    Basically, if it's rock that doesn't sound like Led Zeppelin or Metallica or Poison, it's fair game.

    Kind of like pop rock, but not wussy.
