    I considered playing It, but decided I didn't want to bother with BYOND just for one game.

    That every game I've played with it was horrible and extremely laggy and had a weird interface.  And I'm not really sure how many of those problems have to do with BYOND itself rather than the abilities (or lack thereof) of the creator.  Though, it's been a very long time since I've played any BYOND games.

    Well I am assuming their ability to make reasonable interface for games without devoting a ton of man-power to the cause is BYOND their control.

    But you never had any to begin with.
    Death Note knowledge isn't required beyond "Write name in book, they die." And that's only in the (rather rarely played) Death Note mode. And as long as you appear to actually be trying to roleplay, you should be fine.
