I will hopefully be starting Java soon, since I am in what is supposedly a Java class.

I had some weirdness installing it because my computer has 2 program files directories. Something about using 64-bit Vista or something.

Yeah.  The Wikipedia article says that it's shorthand for "x86 32 bit compatible" basically.

Eventually technology will transition to a state where anything is compatible. Like PS1 games with PS3 games.

Yeah, that won't really happen.
As hardware changes, older stuff will stop working.  That's just how it is.
Of course, emulating old hardware is possible, so it's not a huge loss.

I have 32-bit Windows 7 despite the fact that my computer is capable of running 64-bit Windows 7.

I'm not sure why I've done this.

It's actually not a bad move right now, it means it's compatible with most software.
