Our fucked up rating system

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
It strikes me as odd that the genuinely disturbing pencil scene in The Dark Knight is not considered as bad as the scenes is Dead Alive, which are all basically playing with reddish goop.

Not to mention that actions of violence seem to be less abhorrent than the ultimate action of love. Okay, yeah it isn't always about love, but affectionate attitudes rather than destructive ones are present.

Not to mention, what a person will find disturbing is subjective.

All I saw was "Dead Alive" and "love" and I thought "shit, that game? I don't even like volleyball."
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I don't think anyone played it for the volleyball.

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.

Aww... Forzare beat me to it.

But yeah.  Dead Alive is a good zombie movie.  Dead or Alive is a shitty fighting game franchise.  Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball is a very, very, shitty spinoff of an already-bad franchise.

Are you going to contend that that movie would scare anybody above elementary school?
  • edited 2011-06-28 21:22:33
No, but it's a good movie anyway.  Which is not the point of the thread, I know.

^^^You're just saying that because of the sizable breasts, huh?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I found the cell phone scene worse, but whatever.
  • ^^ Nah, I'm saying it because the games aren't fun.  And "Xtreme" is a dumb way to spell "Extreme."
  • they aren't fun because of that huh?

    ok i'll stop now
  • So I heard you like Yahtzee.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
The thing about The Dark Knight is that it was pretty much designed around the ratings system. For example, there's a lot of violence, but practically no blood and a lot of the actual blows are subtly out-of-frame.

Of course, then you get stuff like The King's Speech that gets rated R for swearing.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
But that's exactly my point. Why is more blood automatically disturbing? The implications of the violence are much more disturbing than the any of the gore in Evil Dead 2.
  • I believe that depends on how extreme the violence is.

    Well, for non-guro fans, anyway.

^^^Well, the thing is that the ratings system is a system with specific rules, so it's possible to work around them. "Violence+Blood>Violence" seems like a reasonable rule until people start exploiting it.

I only just now realized he meant sex when he said ultimate action of love.

The way it's handled in many, many works makes it seem more often destructive than affectionate to me.
