"Ave." is considered more proper/correct than "Av."

In school, I was always taught that "Avenue" is correctly abbreviated as "Ave." and that "Av." was nonstandard at best and UNACCEPTABLE AND WRONG at worst.

Why is that? "Av." fits in with the other two-letter street abbreviations ("Rd.", "St.", "Dr.", etc.), and it's not as if it's ambiguous.

I have the same question with "Boulevard" and "Blvd." vs. "Bl."

Because AV already stands for audio/visual?

And St. stands for Saint and Dr. stands for Doctor.  So that's not much of a reason.

"St." I could actually see causing confusion, as sometimes you see abbreviations like St. Clair Ave. ("Saint Clair Avenue"), Clark St. Rd. ("Clark State Road"), and Mink St. Rd. ("Mink Street Road").

But I doubt there's much potential for confusion between "Avenue" and "Audio/Visual".
