I can't ever discuss music with my friends without everybody getting pissed off at me

When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
I listen to music that nobody else I know in the flesh listens to, and vice versa. Thus, I can never get into any type of music discussion without sounding like a pretentious dickmiller.

I think I've made this topic before.

Comments

  • What music is that?

Also, I know that feel. Only one of my friends is as into The Beach Boys as I am.

  • I never saw the appeal of the beach boys.

Well what music do they listen to, then?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Pop. And one listens to more rock-ish emo pop (Muse, My Chemical Romance, etc.).
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
And if you were wondering, people like the Beach Boys due to their contributions both to the sur rock genre and the indie genre. In fact, they could possibly be described as the first true "alternate" band.
  • " emo pop (Muse, My Chemical Romance, etc.). "

    -twitch-

Don't you dare tarnish MCR's name by conflating them with shitty emo pop
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    shitty emo pop

    Redundancy.

    /partly kidding
    //Muse is better anyway
  • You can change. You can.
I don't see the appeal of old music in general, except for Jimi Hendrix and Scott Joplin.

Not even the Rolling Stones? Shame on you.
  • >And if you were wondering, people like the Beach Boys due to their contributions both to the surf rock genre and the indie genre. In fact, they could possibly be described as the first true "alternate" band.

That, and the genius of the music itself.

  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    Yeah, that helps.

    Cue-bey
You're telling me nobody you know listens to pink floyd? The Who?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Nobody I know listens to music much older than 10 years.
  • You can change. You can.
    That's just sad.
  • who the hell are you hanging out with?

None of them have heard of Nirvana? Led Zeppelin? Surely there's something in that list, I'm not even musically well read myself...

  • Woki mit deim Popo.
Nobody I know listens to music much older than 10 years.
So they never heard of Duran Duran, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Boston, Chicago, Helloween, etc.

I guess age is a factor.

  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Oh, they've heard of them. I'm sure quite a few have at least a handful of songs by each. They're just not fans or very familiar with the material.

Though, despite how much I obsess over music, not liking the same type as me is one of the weakest dequalifiers in my assessment of a person. I get over it, especially since they let me play my music in the car and whatnot.

    Loser
I think that arguing about music tastes seems similar to arguing about favorite foods. While there may be some limited objective standards related to talent of the musician/cook, I think a lot of it is subjective and there are some types of songs/dishes that certain people just dislike entirely. I guess that might not have been the best analogy since enjoying music and eating food are obviously quite different.

That being said, I do agree that it can be an obstacle to discussion when most of the stuff you like is rather obscure. Without sharing some kind of common base of knowledge, I think it can be really tough to actually talk about stuff since you either spend a great deal of time explaining or justifying your own tastes.
  • I thought Rolling Stones is a magazine.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Rolling Stone is the (unspeakably godawful) music magazine.

The Rolling Stones is the band.
  • Wow, am I a dumbass.
