The notion of a spouse being personal property

Why is it that people so often talk of their partner (or desired partner) like this? It's creepy hearing people talk about their ideal spouse like they would a laptop or couch.

Actually, I was thinking of pop songs when I wrote this. More specifically, a parody of Justin Bieber's Baby that replaced the line "Thought you'd always be mine" with "I mistakenly thought you'd be my personal property."

And I have heard someone that was indeed serious.

Well, it's not unusual for people to confuse the line between "exclusivity" and "property", there may certainly be a leftover from earlier cultural conceptions of relationships, but it's hard to determine what's objectification and what's just unfortunate wording.

The word "Mine" doesn't always mean hard cold ownsership. It can also mean exclusivity.

"You'll always be mine" means more like "You'll always be my lover", or something like that.

I did notice the Unfortunate Implications, though, while songwriting today.
