Why is a D some times a pass?

edited 2011-02-07 21:56:50 in General
For all my life before high school, I have known a D to be a fail. Not as bad as a F, but still bad. And now in High school, its suddenly a pass. What the heck?

    Cue-bey
A failure results in you not passing a course in high school, so a D would be a pass, but just barely.

Maybe it works differently in the US.

What bugs me more is the skipping of E. What the hell?

I still get at least C's, but yeah. It's still weird. ^^I agree, what happened to E?

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Depends on your school and country.

    ^There's no E because anything below D is a failure, or F.
  • a little muffled
Isn't F short for "fail"? If so, it'd be pretty silly if other letters can also be failing marks...

That said, I've heard that 60% being the minimum passing grade is normal in American high schools, which seems weird...
  • In my high school, 65% was the minimum passing grade.

At my school, a "D" is considered a pass, but if the course is a prerequisite for something else, you need at least a "C" to move on to the next class.

Though my school also uses "E" as the lowest grade, so yeah, we're just weird.
  • In my high school, anything 70% and above was considered a passing grade. That would be a "D" or above, btw.

I thought E was supposed to be F rebranded so as to not evoke the idea of "failure", despite being exactly the same thing.

Also, I thought D tended to be counted as passing.
  • Depends heavily on the school.

Over here, you only need 40% to have technically passed. Having said that, most people still don't think of a D or E as being good grades even if they aren't fails.
  • D = Pass = Good
  • It takes 50% to pass where I live, but I think 60% would be better. They want you to remember more than half of what they teach you, right?
