    Loser
I think some people actually enjoy looking for rare items and like the idea that it is really tough to find them. I suppose they see it as more rewarding because they are so difficult to find.

I agree that it can be pretty annoying spending tons of time looking for them, especially if you cannot accomplish anything else at the same time (i.e. having to go back to places where you cannot get much experience or looking for rares when you have reached the level cap). I also find boss only (or rare monster only) drops to be similarly annoying to try to find because you tend to have to go through many runs of an area for just one or two chances at a rare item drop.

I like the way WoW does it. Most drops worth using come from bosses with 5-6 item strong loot tables. And they drop two of those items per kill, so there's a good chance you'll get the item you want. Furthermore, boss kills give you points that can be used a currency for items that are equal in value (or greater sometimes) to the stuff the boss drops. So sooner or later you'll get good gear.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Evencloths. Dragon Quest 9.

A 1 in 32 drop/steal rate. And the enemies are in the third zone of the entire game, meaning you have to kill twenty of them to gain the EXP you can get from the late-game enemies you can one-hit-KO.
  • I'm okay with this as long as it doesn't take over an hour for each item on average and if they aren't pretty much useless for anything that isn't a specific quest that doesn't get you something that great in the long run anyway.

Well, in MMORPGs, anyway. I hate it when it happens in exclusively offline games.
  • Ah, the time I spent killing Gulgus Gues in Ultimate difficulty Phantasy Star Online...  just trying to get an Imperial Pick  (as the only Section ID capable of finding the damned thing besides).  For a little clarity, I did several runs of the Ultimate Forest level every day for several years... and never saw a single red drop from those bastards.

I just didn't even bother with the Pink Tail.  Well, I bothered for a bit, but then decided that it really wasn't worth the effort.

As for the Sword of Kings--combining Lost Forever and rare item drop is one of the worst ideas ever.  So what did I do?  I just edited my savestate.
