Sonic 3D Blast

edited 2011-06-13 19:37:51 in Media

It's a terribly flawed and not very well thought out game. The slipperiness of Sonic's controls with the precision required of Flicky's scavenger hunt gameplay makes for a lousy, conflicting combination, the special stages are ugly as hell, and the worst thing is that I literally get a headache from playing it.

And yet, it has an awesome soundtrack which arguably is even better than the original trilogy at times, and some of the bosses are pretty cool (though Volcano Valley's boss can go screw itself). So because it has redeeming qualities, I can't completely hate it. That bugs me.

  • Having only experienced it through Sonic Mega Collection I can't say anything about bad controls, as they probably fixed those.

The gameplay being Super Mario 64-esque and "slow" in an installment of a speed-based platformer series has always bothered me.
  • Playing it with a joystick is almost essential. Can't have imagined what playing it with only the Genesis controller's D-Pad would have been like.

    Silence is golden.
I wouldn't hate it much as much if it had saving. The repetitive Flicky-hunting would probably be bereable in short bursts, but the game is ridiculously long. I really don't see how the developers thought it would be beatable in one sitting.
  • They undoubtedly thought the "speed" element would cut down on the play time. But yeah, three hours, and I didn't even get to the Final Fight on my last playthrough.
  • Worse than playing it with a Genesis d-pad must be playing it on a keyboard.  And since my first exposure to the game was via the PC version, that was how I played it...
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
I gotta be honest, I actually liked this game.

Though, I too discovered it via the Mega Collection.
  • I liked the game, and also loved the music, AND also completed it completely in my first sitting.
And naturally I did it on the Megadrive, with a typical Megadrive pad.
The Diamond Dust Zone had my favourite music... I wonder why they totally raped it for the Saturn version to sound all lame and christmassy?
