That Final Fantasy III is Nintendo DS exclusive

no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
(in English, that is--I know there's a Famicom version in Japan). Ya know, I don't understand this. There are two consoles--the GBA and the PS1--where its possible to have a nearly complete collection of the early Final Fantasy games, and yet precisely both of those have a big, Final Fantasy III shaped gap in them. I mean I suppose if I really want it, I could just find a DS cheap and buy it, but even so: why the gap? Why did they choose to release FF3 on precisely one system when every other game in the series was ported to anything and everything? It just bugs me.

    a little muffled
"When we developed FF3, the volume of content in the game was so huge that the cartridge was completely full, and when new platforms emerged, there simply wasn't enough storage space available for an update of FF3, because that would have required new graphics, music and other content. There was also a difficulty with how much manpower it would take to remake all of that content." - Hiromichi Tanaka

What makes it even stranger is that there was a remake for the Wonderswan.

Was there? I've heard the Wonderswan version was just a rumor.

As for the Hiromichi Tanaka quote... is that referring to the Famicom or the DS version? I can't imagine that excuse still flying in the PS1 era (especially since they ported IV, V and VI)

Why don't you just get the translated NES ROM then?
  • The original version is very, very different to the remake in terms of gameplay (and graphics, of course).

I actually have played it via a ROM. The thing is, I'm a collector at heart, and gaps in a collection bother me.

And also, seriously, I can't understand Square's thinking on this one (then again, I've said in the past that a lot of their decisions make no sense).

Okay, fair enough then, if you're actually aiming to collect official physical copies.

That said, I don't get why they've re-released/remade FF2 so many times but not FF3.  FF2 is like the first black sheep in the series.

Maybe they thought it'd be ok if they improved it (and they did. Seriously, an inventory limit?).
  • a little muffled
@MoeDantes: The quote is referring to the (cancelled) WonderSwan version.

So, it was canceled. Well, it's several years ago when I heard about it, I suspect that it was still in development back then. Either that or the article, where I learned of the WSC remake, was flawed information-wise in that regard.

It still sounds like an excuse to me. Surely it must've taken more work to remake FF3 for the DS, or remake FF4 for every system under the sun in addition to making sequels.

Square must just hate FF3 for some reason.

remake FF4 for every system under the sun in addition to making
    sequels

And including the sequel with an additional (albeit shorter) game in-between in one remake. Granted, the Complete Collection version is rather low-tech compared to the DS' 3D remake (which is ugly anyway).

You know which game should have a remake? FF6. If only so that I can own it. I missed the GBA version when it came out and can't find it anywhere. Besides FF2, it's the only game of the 2D generation that I don't have and it's my favorite FF. Yeah, that bugs me.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
Why not get the PS version of FF6 if you can't find the GBA one?
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
Because I can't find that one either.

Really? Final Fantasy Anthology is dirt-common.

I've honestly spotted the GBA version by accident a few times too, but I never bothered because I already have the SNES version.

That may be. But finding a store that sells PS games around here is tricky. And even the few that I found didn't have it. Or any Final Fantasy games for that matter. Or even any other PS game that would interest me.

There are stores that still sell PS games in meatspace?  I thought it'd all moved online to places like eBay and Amazon by now.

    Tableflipper
Well before the PS3 came out I recall seeing a used copy of FF7 in Gamestop, but otherwise i've never seen one in a store I can remember after I got a PS2 (which was near the time it came out.)

^^ GameXchange sells PS1 games, and plenty of them (note that they usually keep their RPGs behind the counter).

In my area there's also a mom-and-pop store called the Game Room which just opened.

You could also always try pawn shops.

Or, for that matter, just order the game online.
