Lack of MMOs that let you steal from other players.

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
If given the choice in any relevant games I'll pick the thief/rogue and if they are MMOs I always hope there is a decent stealing mechanic in place.

However I have only played one MMO with a good stealing mechanic and that was Ultima Online, sadly defunct as this was back in the 90s.
You could steal up to a certain weight from NPCS and other players. You obviously could get caught and there were numerous anti stealing methods in place.

In the most popular MMO WoW the rogue has no such joy of being able to steal from players.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Of course WoW doesn't let you do that. If it did, you could get stuff without spending hours collecting bear testicles.

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
^Which itself is undesirable so get rid of that, introduce player stealing and I'm all for that.
  • Step 1: Play Eve Online.
Step 2: Ninja salvage from mission runners
    Step 3: PROFIT!
Step 4: taste delicious carebear tears on the fora.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
If i cared for EVE that sounds joyous, for the free stuff and the tears.
  • Ninja salvaging is probably the #1 complained about 'issue' on Eve Online. Despite multiple statements from multiple dev team members that the mechanics are working exactly as intended.

Coincidentally. The SECOND most complained about 'issue' on Eve Online is kill mail whines from PvPers. Despite multiple statements from multiple dev team members that they will never make a kill mail system. Nor will they remove self destructing.

I have the exact opposite opinion.
My first online gaming experience was Phantasy Star Online...  which while it had no formal PvP function, was infested with PK clans and the like... and since if someone died in the field, they dropped all their Meseta AND their equipped weapon....  well... yes, there was player stealing going on.
I discovered pretty quickly that it was practically necessary to have a cheat-disk to even play the game online without being robbed of all your valuables, having your characters permanently corrupted or other hideous things (or just having to play solo online, which ruins the point really)...   SO I set up countermeasures.  That is to say I started a guild of disk-users committed to protecting non-disk-users.... Essentially a guild of bodyguards riddled with counter-PK, counter-corruption defenses... tasked with teaching non-diskers the built in glitches so they could escape from hostile players while we dealt with them.
By Thor I loved those days. The Omega Legion was awesome fun. Heck, some of my students got WAY better than me at using Player-Grants... Was kinda embarassing really, but then that was never quite as important as being able to bypass locked doors and restore TP in a hurry.

    So... yeah.
PvP ought to be removed from all MMOs altogether. PvP turns otherwise ordinary gamers (and casual mongs) into competitive jerks... and also gets in the way of nice, calm, relaxing PvE play.  It destroys games.

    At least you can /emote:

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Stealing isn't implemented 'coz...

It sucks to have your stuff stolen by a bunch of dickheads.

    ^^^ No.

Removal PvP can be fun (not just spamming macros). However if the enemies drop nothing (like wow) it really isn't worth it.

    ^^
Yeah but I don't get the stuff afterwards though.

    ^
The MMOs that implement it should have countermeasures and penalties/risks.
Or basically balance the ability to do so.
    Edit:
For example on UO you could only steal something weighing 100pounds at 100% skill in Stealing.
Also the more weight the harder it was to steal.

If you were caught you were fair game for town guards, and if you were a career criminal with low karma, your body could be looted without penalties.
  • Really.
Add a mechanic to steal from other players, and EVERYONE becomes a thief because they hate the idea of hard work.
Admittedly, it would SERIOUSLY fuck up bot-farming... but I don't really consider that a worthwhile exchange.

    Balance the skill!
  • Skill balance is for PvP. PvP shouldn't exist. Hence skill balance shouldn't exist.
  • -stares at the opening post-

    -thinks-

    ...

    -thinks more-

Okay, tell me what the joke is.

Is it how MMO makers have...killed stealing? Or something like that?

    ^ Not a bad joke, but a rather bad set-up.  6/10
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
It is a metaphor for beating my bukkake loving daughter who has cancer and can't buy a cigarette lighter on eBay.

    No joke, a genuine complaint.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
But that would imply that you were complaining.

And we can't have complaining. Not on my Internet.
