The way americans are portrayed in manga / anime...

RE-ANIMATOR
I know I'm British and we tend to be exempt... but it still bothers me a tad that when americans show up in manga / anime, they always have vocabularies limited exclusively to swearing and invoking christian icons.  I mean it has become painfully predictable now... The moment anyone shows up in a manga speaking "english", the first word to come out of their mouth is always "fuck" or "shit" ... followed closely by "oh my god" and "jesus".

... THAT SAID... I suppose it must be international to try and learn swear-words in as many languages as possible, and maybe it is the only english the Japanese folk in question are familiar with. But still.... If I knew so little of a language, I wouldn't bother advertising my ignorance to the world like that.

I actually find this relatively rare, but that might just be because I haven't seen that many Americans in anime to begin with.

    Canadians are awesome though.

  • Are there any Canadians in anime other than Kate?
  • ~♥YES♥~! I *AM* a ~♥cupcake♥~! ^_^
I figure that scene in Excel Saga is worth mentioning here...
  • Are there any Canadians in anime other than Kate?

    Canada, one'd presume.

Also, David and Lewis from Blood+ render your argument invalid.
  • Glaives are better.

I liked it when we appeared in Ghost in the Shell. Sure, we were the bad guys and imperialists, but at least it was accurate.

    Imperialism, fuck yeah.

  • You can change. You can.
Also, David and Lewis from Blood+ render your argument invalid.

How does an exception render a trend invalid?
  • Shut up you limey bastard. I'm too busy eating hamburgers with ketchup and invading countries that I can't locate on a map to care about what people on those Chinese animes think about the the God-blessed paradise that is the US of A.
  • How does an exception render a trend invalid?
Because the exceptions take hostages with ballpens and kill vampires with shotguns.

Also, I don't really think it's that prominent a trend, Americans are just as often portrayed as good natured (if loud) nationalists.
  • You can change. You can.
It's not as if I've seen it that much, I just thought that it was silly to mention an aversion and expect for that to imply that the whole trend was invalid because of that.

    Loser
    Edmania,
What are you talking about? I thought Kate was Japanese.

    SotiCoto,

I actually kind of agree. I found the baseball episode in Samurai Champloo sort of annoying because of how the Americans cursed so much. That being said, I agree with Noimporta here too. I think Willis from Digimon is one such example of a positive depiction of an American character and I honestly do not think that Patricia Martin is that bad of an example of an American either. She might be a bit obsessive, but I think she means well at least.

Then again, I think the Japanese stereotypes of Americans actually differ greatly depending on whether the American is male or female. I feel like female Americans tend to be portrayed in a more positive light than male Americans are, but your mileage may vary there I suppose.
  • If it helps, America isn't like this.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
    Related IJBM:

The lack of positive depictions of Germans in Western media, leading to a situation where only Japanese media includes this kind of thing or indeed much pre-WWII historical reference to them.

But she's one half of the Konata & Patty CD (Cosutte! Oh My Honey), which is awesome!
  • Silence is golden.
The American Sports Team in King of Fighters is the best thing ever.
  •  I just thought that it was silly to mention an aversion and expect for that to imply that the whole trend was invalid because of that.

Silly? me? I am deeply offended by those allegations.
  • Louie... my name doesn't have an "l" in it.
Evilneko... your name is apt. Disliking boobs is the fourth most terrible thing.
    Other guys... um.... carry on.

  • a little muffled
    @Ponicalica:

    This badass mofo.

You? Offended? what has the world come to?
  • One of the more hilarious examples of evil 'mericans is the president from May-Chan's daily life, who does a Will It Blend? with a baby after raping it.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    Fetus fucking?

  • Kichigai birthday!!
    BABBY FUCK BABBY FUCK

    IT'S AWWWWWWWWWRIGHT
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
I'm not bothered by it. I'm also not bothered by stereotypical portrayals of Germans. And it's not like western media is any better.
  • I thought the Germans in Gantz were alright... until the main one started grinning like a loon and pulled a plane out of the air with his mind for the evulz before vanishing.
  • You can change. You can.
I'm not bothered by it. I'm also not bothered by stereotypical portrayals of Germans. And it's not like western media is any better.

It's because you're German. You can say that even though you had one of the less populars bastard in history in charge, you're also one of the world's most powerful countries. And these days, there are not exactly many negative German stereotypes. I mean, anyone who plays the whole white supremacist deal with a German is bound to get destroyed by everyone's protests.
  • Heh. Germans are all about serious business... which is why the average German's sense of humour is so unsophisticated.

Us Brits on the other hand have downright over-sophisticated sense of humour largely founded on our complete inability to do anything else properly.
