"When was the last time you played a truly great game?"

edited 2011-06-08 20:40:47 in Media

Um...recently?

Seriously, I can name several seventh-gen games that affected me in a way comparable to Arkanoid, Yoshi's Island, or Super Mario 64. Elite Beat Agents. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. Rune Factory Frontier. All six BIT.TRIP games. And there's still so much more I want to play. Where is this dearth of quality gaming people from modern hardcore gamers to nostalgic hardcore gamers to pretentious artsy types are trumpeting?

    Jokes aside, I like where gaming is going...even though I'm probably only gonna play only two or three of the releases this year...
  • Some things about modern console games do bug me in ways that were absolutely not an issue in older generations, like some games not having local multiplayer when there's no particularly good reason it couldn't have been done, or the way the Xbox 360 does user profiles (and signing into Xbox LIVE and other such things).  But as far as the actual games are concerned, I don't think they're necessarily worse overall.  That said, I'm a lot less excited about video games now than I used to be, and even when I do want to play video games, I'd rather play older games, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that I just don't want to spend $60 on a video game.

    I only play a few games every year anyways because I enjoy getting as much out of them as possible.

    ^ Yeah, except it's not because of that, it is simply that the only games that interest me are Mass Effect 2 for the PS3, Portal 2, and Arkham City.

    Well, I think that GLORIOUSLeader is definitely right about nostalgia being a key factor here. I think another issue is that people just have higher standards today for games. There are certain things like graphics, soundtrack, presentation, and even story that I think have become way more important today for many people than they have ever really been before. I would contrast the story that many games for the NES and its predecessors had with that of many games today for example and the improvements in graphics and presentation probably go without saying.

    I also feel like the past history of games actually makes it tougher to impress people these days. For example, platformers like the Mario games have been around for a while and I think that as a result, there was criticism of New Super Mario Bros. Wii for being too unoriginal. I think a good number of people want something new for whatever reason and thus have higher standards for games than before.

    "truly great games" I've played recently (and when I started playing them):
    * Recettear (2010?)
    * Grid Wars (2008)
    * Spelunky (2008?)
    * Stepmania (2009) - though this is basically DDR with custom songs.
  • Clean your room little Billy
    I know that amongst the triple A titles of this generation, I've found The Darkness, Arkham Asylum, Saint's Row II and Dead Space to be near-infinitely replayable, and that's just off the top of my head.
  • I know I'd have great fun many times over with Just Cause 2...if I could get it to run properly on my computer.

    Well, yes. I tied sports cars together and used them like a pair of giant nunchucks. It was fun.

    -shrug- Not my thing, I guess.

    I've never played a game I can consider truly great.

    The amount of entertainment I get from them seems to be pretty close to each other (well, assuming I actually like the game and not just testing it out to see if I would or not) all the time anyway though, disregarding length.
  • You can change. You can.

    I thought this was about games in general.

    But I clicked and found out it's about console games.

    Damn dirty peasants.

    Not necessarily...
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
    Demon's Souls is an incredible recent game and Dark Souls is just over the horizon.

    Both Mass Effect games were brilliant.

    Nintendo continues to develop and publish extremely exceptional games at regular intervals.

    Awesome games are everywhere, really.

    Thank you for making irrelevant condescending posts.

    Even if it was made in jest, I don't believe you should be saying things like that.

    Ew, Mass Effect.  Admittedly I only played the first one, but it seemed to be completely devoid of, well, fun.  Other than the fun I derived from seeing how ridiculously fast you can sprint at enemies.
  • a little muffled
    Mass Effect was great and I got super-addicted to it, but I didn't get around to playing the second one when it first came out and then after everyone was all like "it's so much better" I grew to resent its existence. (Also the fact that you can do Tali in it; some nice pandering you got there BioWare.)

    I should probably actually play it some time.

    ^^^ Catalan for second. Duh.

    ^^ Which version did you play? Because if it was the one in Xbox, then I'm sorry for your Sci Fi-deprived ass

    ^ It isn't better than the first except on the storyline aspect. Although that's just the Avengers Assemble fan in me.
