It's been twenty-five years since it was first made, and after all the gaming loves of my life, I still hold a special place for that game. Despite all the improvements to games in that span of time, from more involved play mechanics to better graphics and deeper stories, here is a game that hasn't evolved much, merely spawning a whole pack of clones rather than meaningful advancements. Yet it managed to make the Breakout formula into something that transcends time, with modern (for the time) advancements such as levels and power-ups that make it as compelling as ever to play today.
But this is sounding too much like an IJAM post, so here's what bugs me: that this relatively simple, antiquated game captures my attention in a way comparable to (and often surpassing) modern games.
