  • I was more bugged by the lack of other options. God dammit I want to be a fucking toaster.
  • I'd be cool with that as well.
  • You look so odd without an avatar, Turk...
  • But you never had any to begin with.
I'll take your topic title, and expand it to ANYTHING that forces you to make a mandatory choice between "male" and "female".
  • I don't really care, myself.

There. Now I'm as generic as the rest of you! :P
  • It annoys me now that it's been pointed out to me.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
I picked "female" because why not.
  • I didn't click anything, so I think I'm currently male, but I don't wanna be male. Become male, and I'm misogynist and generic. Be female, and suddenly I'm out of the norm and a teenage girl.

I don't want to be either.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
Checking your profile confirms that you are counted as male.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
    CURSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES

is the proper way to say it, AHR.
  • You know, this prolly should have gone in the general section...
  • But you never had any to begin with.
Well, it applies to IJBM on a technicality, so...
  • I sent an email to vanillaforums support about this. Hopefully they will respond.

Worse comes to worst, we just all pretend to be transexual agenders.
  • Yeah, I mentioned this in the new site layout topic.

The one thing I can say I dislike about this forum is the whole
mandatory "setting a gender" thing in your profile. Right now I am using
the default, but I suppose I could switch it everyday since that kind
of thing is classified for me anyway.

    (void)
I got a response back from a vanillaforums guy.
«Hi William, that option is there purely for activity reports like "Henry changed his profile picture". How would you suggest we solve this problem with no gender specification?»
My suggestion was to use the singular they.

    La vie en rose
Yeah, I kinda like the Something Awful classification of female, male, and porpoise. Anything besides the regular boring two.

^ Henry changed his or her profile picture, too.
  • I know both of your genders anyway. Ironically, they stuck in my head precisely because you want to be ambiguous so much. Talking about it tends to make people curious, too. Hell, I don't think I ever found out, say, Aondeug's gender and I don't really care. I just default to guessing male because that's how I roll.

I don't see what the big deal is, but that's just my two cents.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean
I think they should add "neuter", personally.
  • edited 2012-07-22 16:38:28

  • Because you never know what you might see.
    Same here.
  • I'm biologically a guy, but I voted liberal so I could have went either way really.
  • Hey William. We require gender only to format pronouns in the activity
stream. I understand the issue and I wish we had made the sentences
work in a general neutral fashion from the get-go, but this is a
pretty big change at this point. I'm also not sure what the
repercussions would be on other language translations. I know that we
had to add more gender specifications in so that the eastern European
    languages could properly format things.

So, sorry this probably isn't the answer you're looking for, but I
hope you can see where we are coming from here.

  • It's kind of awesome that they actually took the time to reply.
  • It is indeed.
  • Great service.

Agreed.  Poni, you should compliment them on their service and thank them for their reply.

That said, I would like a "neuter" choice too, at least.  It always bugged me that Spanish nouns only had masculine and feminine genders.  I much preferred the fact that Latin had a neuter gender.
  • I indeed complimented and thanked them.

As for the Latin neuter, using that for a person is...insulting, to say the least.  It's like calling a person «it».
