"Shoving [work] down your throat"

edited 2011-06-06 17:45:44 in Webspace
For quite some time I've been wondering about this, and as somebody who likes various popular things and specially Touhou, this concerns me.

People keep saying that the Touhou/Homestuck/MLP:FIM/Haruhi/Twilight/Evangelion fandoms are shoving their work down people's throat, yet about these I've mostly just seen threads you can ignore, avatars that serve as somebody else's icon, conversations between fans you can scroll through, image macros that say something you can understand as a non-fan, trope examples that are examples of tropes, and overall things that can't or shouldn't be perceived as people invading your attention, or otherwise bother one. I guess it can get tiresome if threads you like get repeatedly and irreversibly derailed (replaced?) by something you don't, but I haven't really seen it very often.

So, is it simply a case of people hating popular things? Or are they justified in feeling like this? Or have I not been looking in the right places to not feel like that?

Myself, I noticed people complaining about the popularity of MLP long before I noticed the popularity of MLP.
  • I think these complaints are silly. The haters are more annoying than the fans, and that's true for stuff like Touhou that I know jack shit about.

  • Agreed with Gelzo.

I disagree on simple grounds that I dislike generalizing people. I'd like to think that even though I dislike ponies, trolls and touhous, I only discuss my dislike for them when it's proper to do so (I.E when they are brought up in a thread where we're supposed to discuss this things)

^ Yeah, but I wouldn't really call someone like you a hater.

Haters are more of the kind of people who are really obnoxious about hating something.

@Juan:What Forzare said. You're more of a disliker than a hater.
  • Instead of "I dislike pony" or "wtf this pony crap" I'd rather see more posts like "c'mon guyz don't derail" if it's relevant.
  • You can change. You can.
Well, to be honest, there's the fact that we don't mind derails so much as repeated derails.
  • While "hating" is bad, I do think that, on occasion, a fandom can be so prevalent as to be annoying. For example, when a general conversation thread gets hijacked by troll roleplay, or a thread someone made gets derailed by the constant posting of pony macros. More often than not, though, it's just overreaction.

    Pony Sleuth
^^I guess I can understand that.
  • You can change. You can.
^^ See this guy? This guy gets it.
  • Y'know, that kind of stuff is annoying to fans, too.
  • But it's significantly moreso for non-fans (generally speaking, of course), since it involves references and in-jokes they don't "get".
  • That doesn't sound like something I'd care about no matter which side I was on.
  • You can change. You can.
Well, it is subjective, then, but I do care. I enjoy threads where I can talk about random shit and I know complaining about a derail is silly in those threads as there's bound to be a theme I am versed on and where some people aren't (Like comics)

doesn't change the fact that those derails are annoying, though. Not for you, but for most people...At least, I think so.

It seems this can easily be ignored, unless the work in question is my penis, in which case you can't ignore me shoving it down your throat.

/is surprised nobody made this joke yet
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
The fandom of your penis is just too small.
  • I can't ignore your girth.
  • It's all one big persecution complex.
  • You can change. You can.
I wonder if Don Zabu himself has a persecution complex about people being persecuted persecuting him or something.

    Loser
    Stormtroper,
So, is it simply a case of people hating popular things?

I think that is certainly part of it. I know there are some people out there who tend to dislike popular things and/or want to look unique and sophisticated. I think some people call those people "hipsters" pejoratively, but I am not sure if that label really fits.

    People keep saying that the
    Touhou/Homestuck/MLP:FIM/Haruhi/Twilight/Evangelion fandoms are shoving
their work down people's throat, yet about these I've mostly just seen
threads you can ignore, avatars that serve as somebody else's icon,

perceived as people invading your attention, or otherwise bother one.

Well, I think part of it is just plain jealously, unfortunately. I think certain people would like to see others posting in threads about things they like and thus may wish that others would not post as much about a more popular work. Plus, to name one example this being a reasonable reaction, I think that it is a bit weird to have a MLP thread in Yack Fest, let alone multiple ones given that it is a work that could easily just fit in its own subforum.

As for avatars, this might just be me, but I think that when a bunch of people use avatars from the same series (especially Homestuck because I feel like the trolls look really similar) it becomes harder for to see people as individuals (as silly as that may sound). I understand that there may be some benefits of that, but overall I prefer variety (unless an avatar theme is going on).

As for image macros, I think Noimporta pretty much described an issue with those. I feel like a big part of the kind of reaction you describe has to do with people feeling left out because they are either not interested in a work or have not ever seen/watch/read it before.

"I feel like a big part of the kind of reaction you describe has to do with people feeling left out because they are either not interested in a work or have not ever seen/watch/read it before."

Part of my motive is similar to this. Why should I concede to see your popular work against my interest knowing most people wouldn't make similar concessions towards watching some of my favourite, yet less popular things? Not that I'd want them to if they genuinely didn't interest them, but lesser fandoms have more to gain.

  • There is, currently, a thread in the roleplay discussion section, in a thread about a pokémon roleplay, that is about nothing but the roleplayers and a random troper who doesn't even roleplay (I think) talk about homestuck.

Make of that what you will.
