People who disagree with organ donation.

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
I've been reading the OTC topic about it.
I'm honestly disgusted/scared by the attitude 'when I die it all goes with me', especially when some of the tropers express the views they'd rather fuck over all their organs before death than have them donated.

In an uncharacteristic bit of derpiness, my little brother didn't know what being an organ donor entailed when asked when he got his driver's license. Apparently he assumed that they meant donation of organs while you were alive.

That said, I don't really get why people care about what happens to their body after death, religious crap and donations notwithstanding. It's not like you'll be using it anymore.

    ^^
I'd happily threaten that but I wouldn't be able to carry it through if the person was in need of an operation.

    ^Exactly Gelzo.
  • Gelzo's got a good point.
  • I'd rather have my entire corpse grinded into powder.

Wouldn't you rather put turned into diamonds, or gunpowder and placed into bullets? Don't you have any imagination?
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
I'd rather put my organ(s) into other people.
  • Well, this one would rather not give anyone legal incentive to wish her death. If, say, this ones chances of survival are slim and there are several people waiting for organ (shudders) this one would rather not give the good doctors a temptation.

^ I'm sorry Beholderess but that just comes off as paranoia.
Any good medical state/health organisation would have safeguards in place to ensure such stuff doesn't happen.

@Beholderess: Seconding the paranoia. Also, if the doctors involved are that shady, why couldn't they just go the extra mile and forge the paperwork?

Complete donation of *everything* that is intact upon death should be the DEFAULT, making you have to opt out if you are really so obsessed with keeping it all.

I can't think of any reason to argue against this.

  • I'd argue against it just because it'd be so difficult to instate something like that, and it'd cause so much backlash and create more opposition to organ donation.

    Don't want gunpowder, maybe diamonds.

I'd only ever donate my organs if I can be sure it only goes into people I like.

    Well, this one is paranoid.

But it's not about being deliberately shady. More like less interested in this one's survival because, well, they tend to be pragmatic. For now, the cost of this one's life usually does not enter the equation for most half-decent personnel - it's not in the field of possibilities, so to say - but if using the organs of dead people was a default, do you really think it won't in itself remind them of such option? That it won't be in the back of their minds that letting this one die might be more efficient?

There are quite a lot of utilitarianists around, after all ;)

No It still comes off as paranoia.(IMO)
Most half decent personnel should be following the Hippocratic oath/directions of those that follow it.

  • This is the wrong thing to say if I'm trying to convince you, but, if that's the case, maybe ethically you should be willing to die.
  • This one might be willing to die but not allowing herself to be killed. There is a difference between self-sacrifice and license to sacrifice other people.
  • I think the important point here is that the likelihood of people taking advantage of your status as an organ donor to assure your death where you could otherwise have lived is so low that the risk does not even come close to outweighing the chances and possible benefits of your organs being donated.
  • ~♥YES♥~! I *AM* a ~♥cupcake♥~! ^_^
I would also count the fact that if such a system were in place, then there could quite possibly be *more* of most organs than needed. Getting organs for transplanting would become immensely easy - probably enough so that any paranoia of being axed for your innards would be unfounded.

Further, it seems to me that it would be VERY rare for anyone to be offing someone for their organs anyways. It MIGHT happen maybe once or twice every so many of years, but otherwise, no. And to be a victim of it? Very unlikely, indeed.

Now add to that the fact that THOUSANDS would be saved every year, and you have a pretty good argument in favor of this.

Unfortunately, politics means that just because a policy would be good to have in place doesn't mean it's practical- or even helpful towards the cause- to campaign for it.

As another troper put much better than this one, "Wanting people to give up their organs after death for the greater good
also puts you in the somewhat fucked up position of hoping people die
more quickly so their organs can be put to good use to save more people."

Again, there is a great number of utilitarianists around.

Note that this one would not be against mandatory blood donation.

BTW Beholderess, you're somehow lacking something. I can't quite put my finger on it.

mightI ask what? This one is not offended, by the way, she is genuinely curious.

"Hoping" isn't fucked up. It's our actions that are what's important, and if we have sufficient regulation protecting people, there shouldn't be an issue. I don't get the notion that one life has more value than two because it takes effort to preserve the two.

    Your avatar.
  • That paranoia...that was common in the 70s. Did you grow up in that decade? That would explain it.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
I actually was thinking about becoming an organ donor. I still do and may do so at some time. When I die, my body will be little more than a worthless pile of bones, flesh, muscles and some other stuff that I would know if I didn't suck so much at biology. Why shouldn't be used for something... well, useful?
  • I'm also going to take this opportunity to advertise blood donation.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
I'm a smoker, so nobody will want my organs.

    Ergo my eventual viking burial.
  • Maybe you shouldn't smoke.
