I think I have become addicted to speed.

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
On the plus side it means there's only one more sleep until Christmas.

  • Bah. Stupid drugs... stealing the good words.
I'm addicted to alacrity. Whatever I do, I gotta do it fast. When I'm playing a game, my character has to run at the maximum speed possible before I give ANY consideration to ANYTHING else.

Well it's more efficient to just open the console and do

    player.setav speed,100
    player.setav athletics,100
  • You can change. You can.
Also, you know, Fallout is actually playable. Shitty, but playable.
  • Fallout does have better loli mods.  That's true.

And Oblivion wasn't entirely boring...  The Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quests were generally fun, and some of the parts in the main quest were good.  Though pretty much all the sidequests did totally suck.  Also the Fighters Guild was horrible and pointless.

Though it does require significantly more mods to make it fun than Fallout 3 does.
  • No. I don't leave anything on the spacebar because my XBox 360 doesn't have a spacebar... and even if it did then I wouldn't do that. My computer is too much of a brick to handle the PC version, but I'm not overly bothered anyway. I already alienated the entire Planet Elder Scrolls community (mostly due to telling the head admin that I refused to lick his arse)... except Slof.
Clearly you don't realise that there is more to training skills in Oblivion effectively than just holding down a button...  but then since you have no appreciation for one of the greatest games ever made, that is hardly surprising.

Oh, and Oblivion > Fallout 3. It just is. Even WITH the VATS headshots. The fallout games don't have enough trees... and the stat system sucks.

Except that vanilla Oblivion's stat system is completely terrible.  Having to micromanage your skill use to get non-shitty bonuses to your attributes on levelup is... pretty much the opposite of fun.  Plus, skills increasing through use in general is kind of annoying.  Fallout 3's skill system is much simpler, and as a result allows you to actually concentrate on playing the game.
  • Terrible because it is only the second greatest stat system ever made, after its predecessor Morrowind?
Terrible because it doesn't give you everything pre-prepared on a platter without you having to work for it?
Or terrible because a little bit of effort makes the difference between being a bit weak and being able to destroy the world with your little finger?

Nah. The stat system is awesome. Your opinion of it is all that is terrible. Skills increasing through use is the way EVERY system should work. Not just the perpetual monster-killing grind of most RPGs.

If you want a simple skill system, go play Fable III. THAT was downright insulting.
  • Except Oblivion's skill system is made entirely of boring grinding.  Except even more boring than the average RPG, because the grinding doesn't even usually involve combat.  It's not that it's difficult, because... it's not.  Rather, it's just really tedious.  Also because of the complete lack of balance between different skills/attributes.  A lot of skills really ended up being a complete waste to increase because all of their effects could be more easily achieved some other way.  Security was useless because the minigame was ridiculously easy, Illusion was mostly useless because its only good spell effect cost too much MP to be able to do anything particularly effective with it (and you could get a staff that caused paralysis anyway), Recovery sucks because potions were always more efficient for restoring health.  Light Armor is strictly worse than Heavy Armor, Blunt and Blade are essentially identical except that all the good weapons are blade weapons.  etc.

Though yes Fable III did suck.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
The only redeeming feature of Fable 3 was the voice actors.
  • Morrowind was better balanced in that regard, yeah... and also had MORE skills to play with...   but still...
Once you understand the balance of the skills and know the system inside-out.... it is VERY easy to make a strong character FAR quicker than you give it credit for. The real grind is only reserved for those who for some reason or other want to get their character to level 70 or so with maxed attributes, skills, the whole malarkey.

I mean ... fuck... how long have you been playing RPGs for? Don't you remember the old-style ones of years back? Running back and forth hour after hour just to level up enough to get through the next dungeon, only to find you have to do it again almost immediately?  ... And that itself pales in comparison to MMOs...
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
^ Repetitive time filler =/= good RPG.
  • Pretty much what I was saying.  The grind isn't necessary in Oblivion.  But for some silly reason some folks seem to believe they HAVE to do it because they CAN do it.
  • it is VERY easy to make a strong character FAR quicker than you give it credit for.

Oh, I know. I mean, despite what I've said about Oblivion, I did play it a lot, and I actually quite liked it. Doesn't change the fact that I thought the skill system was tedious and boring.

Also, very old JRPGs aren't a very good comparison, mostly since, well, they're old. More recent JRPGs don't tend to be like that as much. Even Dragon Quest IX didn't have much grinding, and Dragon Quest is a series well-known for completely refusing to adapt to modern RPG conventions... >.>

  • Fable III.... that thing.
Would have been far better if it weren't for what they did with the skill system.
Now see... I wrote an FAQ for the original Fable... many years ago.  The plot idea was cool, the skill system was nifty, and what they did make of it was rather pretty. It was painfully short though.   Fable II was simpler, a bit warped in places, but lasted a tad longer and was generally as enjoyable.
And then Lionhead for some reason decided that all its players must be complete idiots, and actually made the most derpy derp oversimplified fucking nursery-grade levelling system imaginable.  I'd LIKED earlier installments.... but I, as a fan of the system used in Morrowind and Oblivion.... well... I found what was done with Fable III to be unforgivable.
My opinion of Lionhead has dropped enormously.

They're really letting the whole country down.

    evilneko has dissed console gaming.

    Her opinion is invalid.
  • To be fair, the games in question are Oblivion and Fallout 3, which... kind of suck on consoles compared to the PC.

If this were about, like, Street Fighter, it'd be kinda silly.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    Fallout is not a game.

^ Can't do that; cable not long enough.
  • What if you have a wireless controller?

    There are wireless SNES controllers?
