all quantities other than one are plural

This never really annoyed me until they introduced moles to us. Going 0.45 moles just started grating on me, and I have to wonder, why are things like this?

  • You mean other than 1.

Because 1 is single.  So if you don't have 1 of something, you don't use the singular.

If I remember correctly, aren't quantities of zero plural as well?

I'm pretty sure it's all quantities other than one that are plural.

    Ninja'd.

    ah fuck

    fucking not thinking

^^yes, but we grow up using plurals for number that are greater than 1, so it just seems incongrous to me to use the same...suffix? thing for things less than zero.

  • One kilomole.

    Two half moles.
  • I have -1 sex-lives.

Other languages have words to make quantities double or triple, like Arabic.
  • Arabic is a degenerate moon-language used by loud-mouthed prats. They and their doubles and triples can rot.
  • Don: English used to have a dual number too: it's where "both", "between", etc. come from.

Unrelated: Moles are the single greatest unit in the history of human endeavour.
  • Moles are pretty awesome... as long as you're talking about the chemical measurement rather than the family Talpidae... who are infinitely inferior to badgers.
  • Doesn't Russian have a dual number as well?
