    I have no idea, but given all the "Special is awesome and the anime sucks because Pokémon should be DARK AND SERIOUS" people, someone clearly thinks it was.

    Special wasn't really dark and serious, so much as it had jarringly unexpected spurts of it.  Kind of like the DPPT seasons, really.

    Most of the reason people say they wish the anime was more like Special is because they wish Ash was as badass as Red.

    Well, see, that's actually reasonable, but it's rare that I actually hear someone say that and much more common that I hear someone say they want the anime to be dark and serious like it is.

    Meh, it was typical shonen seriousness schizophrenia.  It just got serious more often than the anime until recently.

    Pokemon Special is more silly awesome than OMG DARKANDSERIOUS to me. That's why I like it over the anime.
