People hating things just because they're popular

It doesn't make you cool, and it doesn't make you look smarter than anyone else, it makes you look like either a complete tool or a child.

And even if it really does suck (I know, subjective, blah blah blah), chances are it's not as bad as you make it out to be. Yes, Justin Bieber can't sing. No, he doesn't deserve to be killed. Same goes for Rebecca Black, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Rihanna and, depending on Which album we're talking about, Lady Gaga.

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
But what about if you hate them and they are popular at the same time but that is not the reason for your hatred.

    Well, that's fine.

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    ^^^ Yes,

    ^^ That's acceptable.

    ^ You ninja.
  • I've seen this behaviour far less than complaints about it.
  • On a similar note, I hate when someone just mildly dislikes something or is indifferent to it, but acts like it's the worst thing to happen on earth just because that's what's popular to do.

Wait, why do you hate Born This Way? At least it's not generic samey-sounding pop.

Of course, as a Pitchfork whore, I generally have no modern, popular acts on my iPod. Take a fucking guess what the most popular and most obscure acts on my iPod are.

    Pitchfork whore?

Also, I just don't think it stacks up to her first two albums. All the songs on it are really repetitive and kind of run together, which people probably think about her other albums, but to me, they had more variety and a little more kick to them, so to speak. None of the songs really stand out like, say, Telephone or Bad Romance or Paparazzi.

That, and I tend to like her earlier / less popular / unknown songs anyway.
  • Woki mit deim Popo.
I'm the same way about Michael Jackson's earlier work.

^^ I get 99% of my music based on what Pitchfork brands as its Best New Music. Thankfully, I enjoy most of it.

And yes, Born This Way sounds very samey. But what I meant was that her other music wasn't really distinctive enough for me to brand her as anything other than a good pop artist (something the genre has been lacking lately, though YMMV I suppose).

    Bob,

I think I agree with you there, that sounds pretty annoying to me. I think that "don't like, don't watch/read/listen" is a bit simplistic and is not really a good response to negative criticisms of a work, but I think it is rather silly to complain about something someone does not even dislike that much. I hope I am not repeating this too much, but I feel like one should like something because one finds it interesting and enjoyable, not because it is popular or unpopular (yes, I would make a horrible hipster).

As for the point you brought up in your first post, I have seen that kind of attitude about Bieber quite a bit, both online and offline. I have also witnessed people expressing this sentiment about sports, especially online. I admit that "hate" may not be the right word for that, but I do think that elitism about interests is not uncommon, particularly for tastes in music.  I will defer to you there though since I tend to stay out of discussions about music.

Yeah, music always attracts the pretentious hipster douchebags who think their opinions are fact.

  • "yes, I would make a horrible hipster"

You say that as if it's a bad thing.

I suppose "being elitist" does work better in place of hate.
