How sensitive / overemotional / easily offended I am

It just bothers me that the smallest things can get me so worked up, especially when I rip on other people for the exact same thing without realizing it. Even worse, I end up lashing out at people for no reason and generally being a complete asshole. It makes me feel like an angry, bipolar idiot.

inb4 comments confirming that I am indeed an angry, bipolar idiot.

    -raises hand-

Except I don't tend to lash on people.

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Well, without trying to sound harsh, perhaps it would be best to not rip on people for things if the same behaviour would bother you? Do unto others?

  • Well, that's obvious. I'm working on it, though. Apparently I do it way more online than in real life, so if I slip up, I guess someone can call me out for it.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Well if you're working on it, it can only get better then.

(Sorry can't stop being obvious tonight :/)
  • I'm getting better at this.

Don't worry you'll get better once this place gets over it's "stress week".
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    Haha.

No both my posts have been obvious.

How are you working on it? If you don't mind me asking?

^Mainly by trying to just understand what others are going through by equating their situations to my own, that sort of thing. That, and trying to be less sensitive and less of a dick, of course.

^^But isn't this place always in "stress week"?

Bob perhaps you aren't forcing aloofness enough when it comes to reading stupidity and dickery. Sometimes the stress of reading bad posts tends to deteriorate your enjoyment and calmness.

Maybe. I just wish it wasn't something that I had to force.

ITT: I suck at ignoring things that irritate me. Baaaaaaaw. :<

    Empathy stuff.
    Sounds good.
  • Wait until you know a person well enough before you're a dick to them, see if they can handle it. Don't expect from yourself that you can above everything 24/7 or with every little thing, and let people in your vicinity know what they can joke about and when you're not in the mood.

    Alright, thanks.

It's not so much that I'm a dick to people, just that when someone has this problem, I end up wondering why they can't ignore it until realizing that I'd react the same way.

Blah, maybe I'm not wording any of this correctly.
  • They're somethin' else.
Basically, don't treat others as you would like to be treated. treat people how they would like to be treated.

    1. I was hoping someone else made this.

    2. Compared to that someone else, you're not oversensitive or easily offended at all.

    V Edited.
  • Woki mit deim Popo.
It seems like a curious lack of empathy on your part.
  • I don't know if I should say this (despite the fact that it is, like, half of the reason why I made the thread), but Don, if you're reading this, sorry about thinking you were being kind of a pussy in regards to ED. :<
  • ^ That's alright. For now, I've got to figure out how to stop being a pussy in more important parts of my life.
  • It's ok Bob. take it easy. Well the subversion of the golden rule solves my masochists dilemma.
  • Bob,

Sorry that I cannot really provide any advice here, but I am curious as to how you are working on getting better at this. I wonder what a good method of keeping calm in such situations is and whether it is possible get better at this type of thing with practice.

That being said, I think that part of it could be how it is harder to communicate online. It seems to me that without being able to see one's facial expression and listen to the one's tone of voice it becomes much easier to misinterpret what another person says and thus get worked up about it. Sorry, I suppose that is rather obvious.
  • The same here.
This one is way  too thin-skinned and quick to take offence. Curiously, it is more noticeable in real life, as in real life this one has no time to consider  her actions and other people's intent and so tends to react automatically. Also, this one extends much less benefit of doubt towards people irl.
