Why do Americans abbreviate Mathematics to "Math" and Australians and Brits abbreviate it to "Maths"?

Because Britian is strangley obsessed with seperating itself from America as much as concievably possible.

"Maths" makes more sense, given that the original word is a plural. It sounds weird to me anyway.
  • The subject "Mathematics" is singular, though. It's a collection of things, yes, but it's a singular noun for that group.

  • "Maths" always sounds stupid to me, though I'll admit that's only because I'm used to "Math".
  • But you never had any to begin with.

    Colony!America started it. :P

@Chagen: Well, I suppose that's true. It used to actually be used as a plural, but that hasn't been common for a long time.

Because math and maths are different.

Maths stands for "Mathematical Anti-Telharsic Harfatum Septomin".
  • Additionally, Maths can only deal with numbers up to 45,000,000,000.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    ^^ & ^ I love you.

Also in the reverse of Central Avenue's post, I think 'Math' sounds stupid, I obviously use maths.
