Why do Americans abbreviate Mathematics to "Math" and Australians and Brits abbreviate it to "Maths"?

    "Maths" makes more sense, given that the original word is a plural. It sounds weird to me anyway.

    The subject "Mathematics" is singular, though. It's a collection of things, yes, but it's a singular noun for that group.

    @Chagen: Well, I suppose that's true. It used to actually be used as a plural, but that hasn't been common for a long time.
