Yes, and it had a coherent plot, and I loved it.

    Wat? then define coherent plot.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Something whose events are strung together and justified by the setting enough that it wasn't just random crap thrown together, basically.

FFIV did not have a sufficiently coherent plot for my liking.  Plot elements just appeared left and right.  FFV did, because it actually focused on the conflict with Exdeath.

Oh, okay. Well get to writing, you'll never know what you'll like until you write it (my main problem is coming up with a plot I'd like to since I already know what will happen, to my disliking).
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
You're not implying that FFIV's plot is more coherent than FFV's, are you?
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
    Yes I am.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Then what do you mean by coherent plot?
  • I don't know about coherent, but I didn't really care for either IV or V's plot. Admittedly I haven't finished V, but it seemed pretty uninteresting. IV had me more involved, but all the forced false deaths were ridiculous. It especially doesn't make any sense in the versions where you can change characters. Admittedly, much of the plot would have had to be changed to remove them, but still...

I actually liked how FFIV had a nearly constantly changing party worked right into the plot.

However, the plot elements felt, like, just so perfectly contrived every time.  And the setting felt like some sort of fantasy kitchen sink--legendary giants, dwarves, airships, communities of hats (i.e. everyone has a specific quirk), deus ex machina (lol twinharp...i wonder if it's even equippable if you hack Edward into it), diabolus ex machina (say hi to Milon Z.!) and stuff.

It was a fun plot, as it let crazy dramatic shit happen, but some moments were like, why would you do that.

FFV felt better (and had better music in my opinion), and had a more consistent motivation: your understanding was that you were up against an extremely powerful opponent, namely Exdeath, and you needed to figure out how to defeat him.  As opposed to having plot twist after plot twist as in FFIV.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Y'know, FFV's plot made me resent Exdeath (the character, within the context of the story).  With a passion.  Everything else fell into place from there.  The pacing was much better in my opinion.

It also inspired for me the idea of making a villain who talks tough from early on, and actually has the firepower to back it up, by totally kicking your ass.

It becomes SO gratifying to finally kick his ass.
  • Yeah, I admittedly never got to the part where Exdeath is actually properly introduced in FFV, so I don't know. :P

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
FFV's best parts where the job system (how I love Rpgs with job systems) and gilgamesh, if mainly for his theme:
Also: "Enough expository banter. It's time we fight like men. And ladies. And ladies who dress like men. For Gilgamesh...IT IS MORPHING TIME!"

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I don't actually like it much.

It's too happy and upbeat for my taste.

I prefer Exdeath's battle theme.  It better reflects a very intense, bitter struggle.

With some assistance from Cygan, jseblan, GMH. and Kraken in IRC, I've
fleshed out and edited one of my ideas a bit and am wondering what
    people think. So...

Story: The gods, called Eidolons (the summons of Final Fantasy)
created summoners to serve as their prophets, essentially, so that
they could serve as a link between the realm of Eidolons and the realm
of humans. However, as time wore on, the summoners grew power-hungry
and enslaved the Eidolons to do their own bidding and control the masses
with their powers. One day, centuries later, a summoner is born who
becomes friends with his Eidolons and is closer to them than humans. One
day, the Eidolons inform him that the high gods plan to destroy the
world and begin anew if the summoners do not cease their ruthless
tyranny. Thus he sets out to bring down the summoner rule. I also have
other assorted ideas like a human revolution that begins as heroes but
cross the line and must be stopped by you.

Gameplay: A tactics game in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics or
Fire Emblem. There would be as many as 40 summons in the game that can
be found and used in battle, each with unique properties and abilities.
It would be mostly an RPG, but the summons would have no leveling up
or equipment, instead simply unlocking abilities through Abiltiy Points
earned in battles. My other ideas are that if you attack an enemy while
another one of your units is adjacent to the enemy you do a team-up
attack, and different elemental combinations will trigger different
attacks. Each character would also have a Limit Break, but I haven't
decided how they would be unlocked. Also, another concept by Cygan is that, for
example, if you attack with a Water-elemental special, it will give
the Water status to the enemy, which would make a Fire attack less
potent but make the enemy more likely to get the Freeze status if an Ice
    special is used on them.

Phew, I think that's all. I'm wondering if it would be worth pursuing or not. Also, sorry for using your topic for my own purposes, GMH, but I am just dastardly like that.

    I don't mind.
  • Definitely not gay.

loud, arrogant asshole who actually backs it up with his own power

Aren't there a lot of these in fiction? Like Frieza in Dragon Ball?

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

Holy hell what a necro. I think I'm going to have to hand you in to the inquisition or something, damn.

  • Definitely not gay.

    -checks date-

    Holy shit, you're right.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

So how is our forum's search function working out for you?

Also, I meant the sort of loud, arrogant asshole who seems all bark and no bite at first, but then is revealed in dramatic fashion to be all bark AND all bite.

    There's Kefka.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

Not really; Kefka is more a comic relief character turned supervillain, rather than the actually-that-powerful-bully.

  • But you never had any to begin with.

One of the first things you see Kefka do is use a mind controlled girl to set fire to his own soldiers. And less than an hour later, set fire to a castle.

Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

Yes, he's a psycho murderer with a clownish personality.

My point is that he's not the regular kind of intimidating.

The kind of character I'm thinking of is more of an authority-equals-asskicking character.  Like, the kind of character who might head a tribe or gang of martial artists and would naturally be the most dangerous of all of them.  Tack a villanous streak onto such a character and put him in a major social leadership position, such as the head of a military, corporate, or political organization.

  • But you never had any to begin with.

That was more in response to Eelektross saying he had no bite.
