Straw Fan

Am I incorrect in thinking that characters like Comic Book Guy generally end up being more obnoxious on the creator's part than the obnoxious fans could ever hope to be?

  • Well, there is the implication that the creator thinks they can "do no wrong"...

You can't be incorrect or correct, since it's an opinion.

But I agree. Though I'm not irritated by creators doing it, but by tropers. "Fan Dumb" isn't supposed to mean "when a fan complains about something, and I think he/she is wrong", nor are the other tropes we use  to bitch about fanbases.
  • It isn't?

    So what's Fan Dumb?
  • Also, the trope itself is called "Straw Fan", but most of the examples on the trope's page are sympathetic towards the creator. Kind of a mixed message there.
  • I find the use of straw "anything" to generally be annoying since a lot of time I think they are just lazy, largely untrue generalizations or stereotypes.

I cannot say I care for the discussion of "fan dumb" either because I feel like it is a bit too focused on people and not on behavior (i.e. the idea that Sonic fans are dumb). I also think it is kind of elitist to dismiss fandoms or parts of fandoms like that even if some fan behavior can be rather annoying. I might be totally wrong here though since I tend to stay away from fandoms anyway.
