When shows you like don't age well

edited 2011-05-20 18:30:21 in General

The recent Lucky Star thread made me realize recently that, given how tied into the anime pop culture of 2006-2007 it is, Lucky Star has not aged well at all since it first aired, and this effect is only going to get stronger as time goes on. At the time, in its own context, the show was great, but now, I just kind of feel like I could be watching something else when I watch it (unlike, say, Azumanga Daioh, which retains its punch even to this day).

It's kind of tragic in its own way.

  • I enjoyed watching it when I knew next to nothing about anime.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I watched Lucky Star in... October, I think, when I'd only seen a couple Anime, and I enjoyed it.

^^ I'm surprised you could enjoy it that way.  I've specifically put off watching Excel Saga until I've watched a large amount of animé (which will probably be never) for that reason.

I also watched Lucky Star back before I'd really seen much else.  I know I saw Haruhi before Lucky Star, but... probably not a whole lot else.  And I liked it then.

I think I'd seen Azumanga, Haruhi, and Black Lagoon before I watched Lucky Star.

you don't even need to know what they are referencing/parodying most of the time since it won't make ANY sense either way.

Actually, I think I'd also seen FLCL and Paranoia Agent and probably some of School Rumble.  Other than those and Haruhi, I can't think of anything else I'm sure I watched before Lucky Star.
  • You can change. You can.
Lucky Star aside, I hate when this happens to anything else. I can't enjoy the Green Lantern/Green Arrow original run because of this.

When it was written in the 70s, it was revolutionary social commentary. Today? It looks like a cliche'd Special ep.

  • Panty and Stocking is an interesting case of a bunch of the pop culture references being American ones. I think like over half of the episode titles are puns on Hollywood movie titles.
  • So, for a nooblet who knows nothing about these shows, why not elaborate on what dates it?

References that were based on what was currently being broadcasted/popular at the time.
  • Doesn't Excel Saga parody genres instead of shows? It can stand the test of time a lot better than reference-based humour.

no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
Yeah I'm not really getting the mentality that "you can't enjoy Lucky Star if you don't get all its references." I haven't seen practically any of the shows it references, and yet I enjoy it immensely. To me, the references don't really matter as much as the fact that I can identify with the kinds of conversations they have. Mentally, I just replace the shit I'm not familiar with with stuff I know by heart and it all works.

There's also the fact that Lucky Star doesn't really have that many anime references, all truth be told, and much of the dialogue makes perfect sense (or in some cases, as much sense as it ever did) with or without the context. I mean, I'm sure "balsamic vinegar" is timeless.
  • You can change. You can.
Well, it's timelessly unfunny from what I can tell.

They're just jealous of our love, Konata...

    That's right, just jealous...

    *Huggles Konata*

Yeah, that isn't creepy at all...
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
    :/

Now I can see why even Ponicalica doesn't like him...
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
Man, even I wasn't that bad when I had massive PSL for Luka...
  • You can change. You can.
^^ Man, I don't think anyone likes Moe Dantes except maybe Loid/Radd/Land Of Gold/Whatever the fuck he calls himself these days.

^ Dude, even my obssession with Asuka/Misato is subtle compared to his with Konata. And she's a small kid! Like a fucking toddler!
  • Pro tip: Dantes is joking.

Dantes stop making our fandom look bad
  • Writer, Artist, Obscure.
Dantes, do your best to make them look as bad as humanly possible. I'm counting on you.
  • Doesn't Excel Saga parody genres instead of shows? It can stand the test of time a lot better than reference-based humour.
    Yes, on both accounts.

  • I'm just happy Dantes' waifu isn't a pony.

    Great, now I'm imagining Ponata.
  • ...where's the punchline?
