No other legendary Pokemon had or will ever have the same impact that Mewtwo had.

I think it was because many of the techniques used in Melee competitive play can't be used with him.

I don't get why people would rather play that competitively over a game designed to be competitive like Street Fighter. Same with Pokemon, for that matter.

I never said I found tourney play to be better than normal play.

I prefer using tourney techniques in normal casual play. That's really fun.

Just to give an idea of Mewtwo's statistical domination...

Arceus nowadays has a 720 base stat total, the highest in the game. To calculate a base stat total is different in RBY as there was only one Special stat that operated both attack and defense; thus it is proper to add a Pokémon's Special twice when summing thier base stats. Mewtwo's base Special stat was 154, miles above the second-place Alakazam. If we count Mewtwo's Special twice, his RBY base stat total is 744.

Furthermore, Arceus competes against other legendaries of 680 and 670 base stat totals. Mewtwo's closest competitor in RBY was Moltres with a total of 620.

Mewtwo in recent generations is known for its towering Sp. Attack and Speed; what people might not remember is that Mewtwo was the premier defensive Pokémon in RBY. Not merely "good defenses", he has the best in the game. He's the ninth most physically resistant Pokémon in RBY above Pokémon like Articuno, Blastoise and Exeggutor. He's the second most specially resistant Pokémon after Chansey. He learns Recover, Amnesia, and Barrier. He has no weaknesses.......and we all know how vicious his attacks are.

In Melee, of course, he kinda sucks, though I wouldn't say the worst character. Kirby, Pichu, Ness, Bowser, maybe Roy or G&W or Yoshi are all worse.

I've seen people use Ness extremely effectively, messing with people's heads by using PK lightning to do fun stuff.
