    Figure out what you have issues with and work on each aspect.
  • Relax. People aren't your enemies, they'll almost always be on your side when you first meet them. Even if they act hostile, it's usually just fun and not meant seriously.

    This sounds specific because it's pretty much how I got over my social phobia. Might be different for you but I thought I'd throw it out there.

    This is not the case with teenagers and young adults, though. Many of them are genuine douchebags.

    By now, I wonder if I even should overcome my own social awkwardness. It seems so... pointless.

    This I can sort-of understand, but the thing is that most of the people who act this way towards me are people whom I barely know, don't ever hang out with, and probably don't share most of my interests. So it can be kind of a leap to assume goodwill from these folks.
