I really should have stopped posting there a long while ago.

    Loser
I do not disagree with Myrmidon here. I did not expect that thread to go in a "argue about whether talking about one's problems on the internet is a good thing" direction. For the record, I think that discussing one's issues with other people online can be helpful, especially if one has no one with whom one can talk about those problems offline.

On the related topic of This Troper, I think that even if one should be able to deal with mockery like that, I do not think that makes it any less mean. I feel like trying to cherrypick comments in order to make tropers look bad is an inappropriate act in itself, regardless of whether people are offended by it. While forum posts may be public, I think that people should be at least somewhat polite and refrain from making fun of people based off of those posts.

I guess the issue here for me is that while people may have a right to mock people, I do not think they should.

Quit being a whiny bitch and man up.
It's no more fucked up than any other thread about a "touchy" issue.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I... pretty much agree with what Louie said.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
^^ Why do I have the feeling that it's not fucked up enough for you...?
  • Quit being a whiny bitch and man up.
A little bickering doesn't count as "fucked up"; but since we're on it, what gives you that idea?
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
    Nothing. Nothing at all...
  • Quit being a whiny bitch and man up.
    That's what I thought.
  • Such a wonderful "animal in a zoo" feeling I am getting from the thread right now.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
    Just that thread?

That last page is a very disillusioning read, actually.  Seems like you can't have a conversation on a forum without somebody listening in and criticising you for it.
  • ^^ I used to think I was overly paranoid and silly when feeling like that. Apparently that's the right mindset to have on the internet.
  • GODDAMNIT

    GODDAMNIT

THIS IS NOT HOW YOU FUCKING RESPOND TO THESE THINGS TVTROPES MODS

    GODDAMNIT

    Crap, I was reading that.

^Do you know what went down in the last few pages?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
It's gone now. I clicked to go to page 7, and it just disappeared. Could someone give me a rundown?
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
People were morons. Or is that too general?
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
Things weren't particularly un-civil in the last few pages...
  • It went off-topic.

You know, it's too bad we don't have a forum where things are specifically kept on-topic, so the other forums have a little leeway. But I guess that's just a pipe dream.

Did anyone actually expect that it would stay civil? That would be too naive.
  • It was perfectly civil from what I read.

When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
^^^ Except then, and I'm just spitballing here, certain people would get chastised for even making one humorous observation that's not totally relevant to the topic at hand. Or, in some cases, saying things that are relevant to the topic, but everybody else is too busy being assholes to see it that way.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
    *Checks thread*

    Oh for fuck's sake.
  • Fast Eddie probably implemented a new rule he forgot to tell everyone about.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
No, it was "picking a scab we should let heal over".
  • Because having a serious discussion about the nature of internet communication isn't something we want on Tvtropes. We must avoid contact with outsiders at all cost, like we did with Busy Street.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
    Apparently.

I've made my feelings known on the mod board, but I doubt it will do any good.
  • Well at least those rumors about Tvtropes being a circlejerk of not caring what outsiders think have been safely debunked.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Yay! Now we're a bunch of circle jerks who do get butthurt when somebody on the Internet -gasp!- criticizes us.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    yaaaaaaay

@Bobby: It seems that you get increasingly unhappy with the way TV Tropes us run yourself.

    Just an observation.
  • Soon he will lead a rebellion to overthrow Fast Eddie.
