I like rock for the most part, but this is just something I just do not get. My friends love the genre and assure me it's great and deep and while I might catch some kinda deep lyrics every so often, most of the songs sound almost same-y to me. I don't even mind screaming in a song, I just prefer that it's used sparingly to compliment the whole thing.

I'm not massively into the genre, but I like a little of it. I think the distinctive guitar sound is a big part of the appeal for many people. It's easier to hear if you listen to an instrumental, e.g.:
Also, sometimes they do really unusual things that you just don't tend to hear in mainstream rock, probably because of the experimentation of their hardcore roots. This is a good example (though kinda progressive, in many ways); note also the poetic, reflective lyrics, albeit screamed:
So that's the appeal, I'd say. Yeah, the overall sound and mood is kind of depressing; it's not something I'd want to listen to all the time.
>my friends quoting the really wangsty songs
Hiss and boo. Get new friends. Alternatively, try progmetal/symphonic metal for the same complex guitar work, subdued mood and deep lyrics, but without the underlying wangst.
> deep lyrics
Careful there.
Also, yeah, it's the sound of screamo that I don't like. Curiously, I have a slight tendency to like a rock/metal song more if it doesn't have a voice part, but scream/growling/etc. vocals are the most prominent example of what I don't enjoy.
No, that's power metal (and, oddly enough, some black metal). Symphonic metal...I dunno if there's really a stereotype for lyrical themes; it seems pretty varied. Mythology seems to be a common subject, possibly because of Therion's influence.
Except that genre is not really very similar to screamo in terms of sound and the two genres have different strengths. Apart from anything else, it's typically heavier (though some screamo bands like Orchid are pretty heavy, I guess) and typically emphasises metal qualities such as riffs and soloing.
Besides, maybe it's because I'm more familiar with the classic rock and heavy metal traditions that Tool draw from than I am with hardcore punk, but I'd say Circle Take the Square have a more interesting general sound than Tool. At the very least, they're similarly musically complex and removed from the mainstream rock sound, and I think their lyrics are more poetic. Lyrically, they remind me a little of the Manic Street Preachers only without the political aspect.
@glennmagusharvey: Did you listen to the tracks I embedded? The first is a purely instrumental track, and the second is a song but with an extended instrumental portion.
It's OK, prog/symphonic metal are my favourite subgenres, but for every "Paradise Lost", there usually are three "Prophets of War".
