Yeah, Rick Snyder (current Republican governor of Michigan) definitely isn't your kinda guy if you are looking for checks on government power.  He's been getting himself emergency powers that let him dissolve town governments at will or something.

Anyway, I would appreciate it if you could narrow down who you are talking about when you mention Conservatives. I know of a good number of people who self-identify as Conservatives, but really like freedom and liberty, especially in economics. Maybe Republicans are not "true Conservatives" or whatever, but I often hear Republican officer-holders talking about how we need to have smaller government and give more freedoms to the people. I suppose you could call that classic liberalism or something like that, but I think a lot of people these days just call it fiscal conservatism.

I can agree that perhaps social conservatives are a different breed, but I do not think that every Conservative is a social conservative or that every social conservative wants a corporatist theocracy. In fact, I have never met one who ever said that he or she did. Personally, I think that talking about Conservatives like that only increases polarization and is not in the spirit of dialogue, but your mileage may vary there. I am not an expert on Conservative ideology after all.

Well, the terms "liberal" and "conservative" have mostly lost intrinsic meaning by this point, and exist simply as labels whose meaning changes with the political landscape of the times, being used by allies and enemies on various sides of various issues to identify (and sometimes misidentify) each other.
