Which version of RPGMaker should I get?

Morgan Freeman is God
I want to make some custom sound effects and animations for RPGMaker, but I don't know which version of RPGMaker works best on a netbook. Which version should I get?

...Weren't you talking about how RPG Maker is evil like, two days ago?

The reason why I said how much I hated RPGMaker was because I hated the stock sound effects and animations. Someone suggested I create my own sound effects if I hate the given ones so much, so I decided that I will.
  • Why not just get Game Maker?

Well if you want to make an RPG, making it in Game Maker will be... difficult, to say the least.  RPG Maker isn't great, but it's still infinitely easier to use for making RPGs than any alternatives.

In any case, I don't know the answer to the question in the OP.  In fact, I don't really have any familiarity with RPG Maker at all (other than the console games).  But if you're intending to pirate it, then just try them all and see which one works best.  If you're intending to buy them, then... your only options are really XP and VX anyway (as those are the only PC RPG Makers that had an official English release.  I guess you technically could still buy 2k or 2k3 and patch it though...), but both of those have demo versions I think, so you can just try those and see which one is better.

It all depends on how complex you want the graphics to be.

If you can make custom animations in 32-bit graphics (like a 2D Playstation 1 RPG), go for XP or VX.

But, if you, like me, prefer working with the simpler 16-bit graphics of yore (like an SNES RPG), go for 2000 or 2003. If you do that, however, you won't be able to take advantage of Ruby script.

Anyway, the answer is obviously VX. It's almost like cheating, don't you know?

"If you do that, however, you won't be able to take advantage of Ruby script."

Isn't that really the only good way to make a game using a game maker? The default system is crap.

  • ^ Judging from the awesome games people have with 2000 and 2003 along with XP and VX, technology isn't much of a hindrance here.

Have people made awesome games that are...you know...not from 2003 and earlier versions?
