Getting into things after their heyday.
And then realizing that you'd probably have more fun when they were popular.
I bought this old Beyblade Gamecube game I used to love for 2 bucks at this second-hand shop. I got to play it with my friend today--after he showed me some of his old beyblades, I decided to go out and buy one. I ended up buying two at the same time. I just tried them out, and I think we'd have some great fun battling them.
But damn, the Beyblade section at the store was pitfully tiny compared to the other sections. And I don't really know anyone else who plays. Which sucks, 'cause beyblades are awesome. Bakugan, Beyblade did that shit way earlier and it did it better.
Oh well, I hope I can have fun battling my friend.

Now I'm apathetic to it but I can get what you mean. I mean I'm only just saw the original Star Wars trilogy a few months ago and I'll tell you, my childhood would've been 2% less confusing had I had seen those too long ago.
Yes, I meddled with it. I actually really liked the concept... it was like the best part of Armored Core, in the form of a top! But I didn't have a lot of moneys at the time so I didn't get too far into it.
As for the topic subject, being an old-school gamer and cartoon fan, this happens to me practically all the time. In all honesty, sometimes its for the better--like, I probably had a better experience with Metal Gear Solid 2 than most people because I played it literally the day after I beat MGS1 instead of waiting and building anticipation for a few years, and so had a totally different set of expectations.
To be honest, I don't really care if something is current or not. Should I not be reading Alexander Dumas novels because the man has been dead for over a century? If I'm enjoying it, then age is irrelevent.
