Cornell Notes.

I'm not sure why my Biology teacher sticks by these so much. They artificially increase note-taking time and they don't really do much in general. At least, they never helped me remember the curricula any better than normal notes. Which means that there's no real reason for me to do them. Expenditure of work for little to no discernable benefit is wasteful allocation of resources. Since people should strive to be as efficient as possible, it's odd to see people do inefficient things. At least in my opinion. I still did them anyway, even if it took all period. >_>

    What are Cornell notes?

  • if memory serves me right they saved my life in in my US history class.

    Hunh, never heard of them.

That said, I basically do the top portion; the only part I don't do is the summary/commentary portion.

    Loser
I guess this type of note-taking can help some people, but I generally think that teachers should not require their students to use a certain method of taking notes. I can understand making people take notes as a way to kind of force them to learn, sure. I just agree with Chagen about the time-consuming aspect of this particular note-taking method. If taking notes another way is significantly easier and more effective for you, I think you should be allowed to use that technique instead of being forced into a "one-size-fits-all" type of requirement.

    I agree as well.

I do think it's alright if your teacher encourages a certain method of note-taking, and possibly requires students to take notes, but it seems strange to require them to take notes in a particular format.

This format in particular seems... weird.  I can't imagine myself ever using them.  That said, taking notes in class isn't really something I do in general... >.>
Except last semester in Economics when my professor put all the notes on the board before the start of each class, so I just copied those and didn't actually listen to the lecture.
  • The thing that bugged me today is that I was filling out notes for Biology. There was a large amount of them already filled out--you just had to fill in the blanks.

The Cornell questions? They were worth 50% of the grade for that paper. What the fuck.
