People who buy indvidual songs on stuff like iTunes

edited 2011-05-11 10:07:34 in General
When a ton of people are only buying individual songs (almost always singles) basically makes the emphasis on a band to create only more mainstream, marketable songs. While it's obviously not going to be "omg the end of all music" stuff, it is going to be a problem for bands whose music is more of a theme album, or is otherwise less marketable. Plus, think of how many times a single was different from the actual album it came from (like "The Real Slim Shady" compared to every other song on that album).

  • I agree. I usually bought an album for one song, but ended up loving all the other ones on the album too.
  • We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year

Is this really that big a problem, though? Most of the progressive rock bands (whose albums are conceptual more often then not) that I know of have no problem making a decent amount of sales.

  • I like turtles.
I almost never get a whole album, simply because there will inevitably be tracks that, while they might be good, are not eargasmic enough for me to consider them worthy to put on my MP3 player.  Mind you, I rarely listen to music that's commercially available anyway.

    *raises hand*

I've never gotten an entire album, and would not do so unless it consisted of kickass songs.

    Umad?

You mean like the entire music industry for the past 70 years or so?
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
I have not used iTunes ever.

But I'm thinking of starting (more for their TV shows than for music though). Is it worth it?
  • I'LL STAY MAI HAUNDS...WITH YAU BLAHT
I like it, but then again I'm not the sort of person who goes to DRM rallies and jailbreaks my printer. I wouldn't listen to me.
  • I buy single songs. Cause why not?

  • Morgan Freeman is God
This is why I tend to buy more obscure individual songs on iTunes.
  • I have never used itunes to buy music and never will.
  • I love the fact that the days of having to shell out $20.00 for an album that had no more than two or three songs I actually liked on it are over.

I do still buy full albums in cases where the number of songs I like means it's cheaper to buy the album than to buy the songs individually. The way I see it, though, is that it's up to the artist to prove to me that the album is worth being purchased as a package deal.
  • Man, what's with you people?

I've never bought an album where I didn't like nearly every song. And I can use CD's in my mom's car too, I hate buying only individual songs.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I've had various experiences of liking just one song in an album.
